Why Two Discs?​

Rebirth is so big that Square is splitting it between two discs. Hamaguchi states that the game is 150GB, with 100 on one disc and 50 on the other. However, you won't be swapping discs like fans did with the original. Due to the PS5 architecture, players will first install the entire game by inserting both discs. After that, only one of them will be needed to play the full game.

Hamaguchi explains the decision to split Rebirth in this way had less to do with rekindling nostalgia and more as a method to preserve the team's lofty vision for it. Square had always envisioned Rebirth as a massive, highly detailed world more immersive than Remake's revamped Midgar. Thus, squeezing it on a single Blu-ray would have forced the designers to scale back on content and ideas, so doubling up on discs became the obvious solution.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is looking like an early GOTY 2024 contender for me based on these previews.

• Performance mode and Graphics mode confirmed
• Game will come on 2 discs, 150GB total
• Same action-packed combat as the first game with the Synergy system being the major new addition
• Parry confirmed
• Swimming confirmed
• Crafting confirmed; you can craft healing items like Potions and Phoenix Downs.
• You can play as Sephiroth
• Main story will be roughly 35-40 hours (a little longer than the first game)
• Every character now has a dodge by default
• Exploration seems to be a big highlight. If you spot a pirate ship in the distance you can swim to it and find secret treasure.
• Hit R1 to call your Chocobo in the open world
• Chocobos can swim, fly, scale mountains, sniff out buried treasure, and more
• If you spot a baby Chocobo, follow it to unlock a fast travel point and some new cosmetics for your mount
• Story will end at The Forgotten Capital
• Red XIII is now fully playable with a unique combat system
• Vincent confirmed to join the party in a similar way to Red XIII in the last game
