Don't know if its been suggested, but check out Lunopolis. Especially if your in to time travel or space conspiracy theories. One of the best indie sci fi flicks I've seen.

Watch Outrage (lead is the bad guy, Takeshi "Beat" Kitano from Battle Royale) and 13 Assassins to compensate

Beat Kitano's forte is Yakuza films.

For a similar plot to Battle Royale or Hunger Games. I'd watch that Steve Austin movie call Condemned. Low tier film but I managed to enjoy it a lot.

I should warn Outrage is a slow film as well. You also gotta give pay close attention to what's going on or you'll get lost to the plot.
