:patrice:I think I remember him saying he was with Stretch. Pac didnt get shot til Nov 94. Of course Illmatic came out in April so Stretch was still friends with both. Pac was in and out of jail for various reasons so maybe it wasnt the rape case stint. But I do remember reading this interview thinking ":usure:this nikka Nas lying:skip:why he just now telling this story:what:"

On Tuesday, hip-hop superstar Nas hosted a star-studded, fashionable affair at 1 OAK Nightclub as the rapper celebrated the launch of his new sneaker shop 12AM:Run.

Before taking over stage, Nas and his 12AM:Run crew celebrated the special occasion with a toast. The legendary lyricist then got on the mic and kicked off his performance with a shout out to the new store as well as boxing champ Floyd "Money" Mayweather and rapper/BET 106 & Park host Bow Wow who were spotted taking in the club scene. Nas performed a number of his classic hits including "Hate Me Now," "Made You Look" and "If I Ruled the World."

Hip-hop legend Nas gave an unforgettable performance to celebrate the launch of the hot, new sneaker shop 12AM:Run at 1OAK at the Mirage on Tuesday night. The singer arrived in Vegas from Houston earlier in the day and stopped by 1 OAK for a sound check and dined at STACK Restaurant and Bar. Nas and seven members of his entourage ordered the restaurant’s greatest hits and cocktails from the restaurant’s new menu.

Then it was off to 1 OAK for photos on the red carpet, where the stylish emcee was clad in an all black ensemble from head to toe. He then was immediately escorted inside to a VIP table, where he quietly observed the scene. Before blazing the stage, he and the 12AM:Run crew celebrated the occasion with a toast.

He kicked off his performance with a special shout out to the new store as well as boxing champ Floyd “Money” Mayweather and rapper/BET 106 & Park host Bow Wow, who were also in the building. Nas performed a play list of his greatest hits including “Hate Me Now,” “Made You Look,” and the smash hit “If I Ruled the World.” The at-capacity crowd sang along to his songs, while dancing non-stop during his performance.

After Vegas and a fun-filled night, it was back to New York City for Nas and his entourage.

Also spotted at 1 OAK,
boxing champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather and a large group at a VIP table next to superstar emcee Nas’ table; producer and “They Don’t Know” singer Rico Love taking in the scene at his table on the dance floor; rapper/TV host Bow Wow posing for pics and partying in a VIP booth; and NFL player Dwight Freeney celebrating his birthday.

Nas was in attendance last night for the premiere of VH1′s Tanning Of America: One Nation Under Hip-Hoppremiere, where he was featured on a panel moderated by Gayle King and featuring the likes of Al Sharpton, Fab 5 Freddy, FUBU founder Daymond John and longtime manager—and author of The Tanning Of America: How Hip-Hop Created A Culture That Rewrote The Rules Of The New Economy—Steve Stoute. After the first two episodes of Stoute’s four-part series aired, moderator King asked Queensboro’s finest about his thoughts on his upcoming documentary, Time Is Illmatic, debuting at the prestigious TriBeCa Film Festival this April.
“I don’t see myself as the most mainstream around, I just see myself as, I’ve been around,” Nas said on being asked what it was like to be accepted by the mainstream via the film fest. “I wanted to see what it was like… I definitely stepped into the mainstream stage for a little while, partied and had a good time, and then I went back to what I was doing.”
Nas, who has eight platinum albums to his name, has never been the highest-charting rapper—though he can boast three No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200—but that hasn’t stopped him from being widely regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time. But in the context of Tanning, which maps the convergence of hip-hop into the mainstream, he’s still got plenty to say on the matter. Sharpton, for his part, was able to sum up what happened to Nas when he started being recognized for the art he was creating.
“Nas never wanted to go mainstream,” Sharpton said during the panel discussion. “Instead, the mainstream went to Nas.”
King also asked him about the difference between hip-hop and rap, and whether he spends much time thinking about what separates the two.
“Sometimes. Sometimes I don’t worry about that,” he said. “Hip-hop is Sugar Hill Gang, the early stuff setting the world on fire, and rap was the commercials… That’s not what the realness is. There’s a difference
