Dudes get too caught up in the "what ifs" regarding the original double album plan. That version was released in a parallel universe brehs. No need to downplay the released version, 22 years later, because the original idea was scrapped. The album as released is still dope!! 4.5 mics, easy.
:ehh: I wouldn't say that there's some songs that really bring it down. Dr. Knockboot, Kissing, MIMB(lyrically its dope but the beat) Big Things. To me its a solid 4 mics its same as 4 God Son imo:manny:

But I thought people shytted on IWW when it came out? So now IWW was a classic when it first dropped? :patrice:

Yeah and NOW people think it's a classic due to how shyttier hip hop has gotten.
Same shyt would happen with the OG I Am.

Name the Casio beats. Lol. U can name like 2 or 3 tops. Lol. Dame Grease produced Ghetto Prisoners which is fire. U had LES do Life Is What U Make It. And I Wanna Talk To U. That’s it really. Lol
Big Things and Favor For A Favor too. That was the sound at the time. Ghetto Prisoners is a song with a bad beat that I like...it just fits his flow and works, weirdly.

Jay was rapping over stuff like that too. I can’t stand Swiss’s production...nobody agrees but Money Cash Hoes is a terrible beat to me. But that was the sound at the time.

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
:snoop: That's not what I'm talking about.
Nas's ALBUM discog would be looked at in a better light if the OG I Am came out.
How? When IWW was one of the best albums to drop in 96 and STILL got shytted on? It’s the album that made Nas “Nas” and doesnt get nearly as much love as his debut. Nothing Nas could’ve done would’ve changed anything for I Am. Cause on real life. No one hated it. Streets was bumpin it like crazy.

Jay had FAR worse beats on Vol 3 than Nas had on I Am. shyt I think Ghetto Prisoners beat is fire to me. I honestly don’t see what’s wrong with it in any capacity. I like the melody. The progression. And the shyt bumps. shyt was Dame Grease. Put that same beat on Flesh Of My Flesh and no one has a problem. Favor For A Favor was heat.

The production on I Am is actually pretty unique and varied. It's just a cleaner sound than Illmatic and IWW, more keyboards, but that's cuz keyboard and synth beats were popping in 98-99...especially after FOMFBOMB and Vol 2 sold so much.

I love the beat on Ghetto Prisoners, I don't care. It's a dark synth beat that I swear If Jay or X or Pac or Twista or somebody else rocked over, people would have no problem. But since its Nas, its gotta be dusty boom bap or bust. :francis:

The keys on I Want to Talk to You are super unique too. It's kinda off kilter though so I get why not everyone would fukk with it. Not crazy about the chorus personally.

Money Is My bytch has a dope steel drum, what's not to like?

You Won't See Me Tonight got that classic Timbo bounce.

We Will Survive is smooth.

Life Is What You Make It and Favor for a Favor are BANGERS. LIWYMI has an Egyptian sitar on it or something? Probably a keyboard but it sounds like a sitar, which fits the album art perfectly.

All of this is exactly how I feel. And if anyone else had these beats, No issues whatsoever. Jay that same year was droppin shyt like Things That U Do, S.Carter, and Pop 4 Roc and no one says shyt. shyts is worse than the worst shyt on Nastradamus.

Them shyts should've never been on the album :snoop: till this day they sound like ass to me.

Now replace them with Hova Song Interlude and Outro, Anything, Jigga My nikka and Is That Yo bytch OG and it's one of Jay's best albums :wow:

I always say Jay had some very terrible beats on that volume series that nas would get killed for. Obviously not all the beats but there were some absolute awful ones.

Speaking of "I am" production. Always loved this beat because it sounded like something Big would of done especially with Nashiem Myrick and Carlos on the boards. Also NaS cinematic storytelling made it one of the best on the album.

Top 5 Nas song for me. Nas said in an interview once that Small World and NYSOMPT2 were two of his favorite songs that he ever did.

Nas names his three all-time favorite tracks

One of my favorite nas songs that aren't mentioned much right alongside life we chose.
