I Am deservedly gets shytted on, that album is complete mid outside 4 songs.

The original double disc version would've been very good however.

Them leaks fukked up Nas's career :snoop:

Had Nas dropped a double album, he still would've had the same critics. There still would've been songs that purists looked at as too commercial. Then there's the inevitable "it should've been one disc".

My biggest gripe with I Am is same as I have for most of the albums of that era. I hate the repetitive Casio type beats that are on it. Same goes for Jay’s albums and even lot of DMX’s, Lox etc stuff. shyt has aged horribly while the boom bap stuff hasn’t and the soul sample stuff from 2000s also aged fine

All this talk about I Am is making me want to create a custom playlist and try to recreate the original tracklisting on tidal.

Anybody got a track list for what it was originally supposed to be

Exactly. One of my boys just went back and listened to I Am again after he saw Nas’ post on it talkin bout how Nip wanted to do a documentary on it. nikka was like “yo wtf why am I just remembering how dope this album was? Where did the hate come from later?..”.

It was crazy. I remember people actually recommending I Am saying it was like the balance between Illmatic and It Was Written because it was balance between Nasty Nas and Escobar. I don't remember anyone saying it was wack.

Another thing is Iam is vastly underated amongst Nas fan.

When you see the rankings of Nas' albums on here I am is often very low. Like to me I am is better than untitled/hhid/nasir/nastradamus/sd.
It's debatable with god's son/life is good/king's disease because theses three albums are more balanced but Iam got better highs but some worst lows. Only Illmatic/iww and stillmatic are clearly above

I agree with people saying the OG I am would have still caught from a certain section of rap fans and there would have been a narrative for certain writers plus the backpack communtiy. Hell if It Was Written caught it why wouldnt this? And Im sure a Jay or Cormega or whoever would have still dissed it for that reason. But Im sure there would have been some fans and media especially street dudes that might fukk with it. I still think he'd be pressured to have a commercial joint like Hate Me Now or You Wont See Me Tonight and honestly I think he'd need it just for levity with all the deep cuts.

But I thought people shytted on IWW when it came out? So now IWW was a classic when it first dropped? :patrice:

This is far more true than the people who swear that I Am was universally panned off release. I'm certain Hov was referring to IWW as the album the second album that was doo because IWW had more criticism behind it by critics upon release than I Am.

Nah. He said it was “due”. 2 of em was “due” meaning IWW and I Am was “cool”. He said one was “nah” which would be Nastradamus. The other will Illmatic. That’s a one hot album every 10 year average. So basically Illmatic was a classic, IWW and I Am was aight. And Nastradamus was trash.

Yea his career was so fukked up that he’s still revered in the game and winning Grammy’s 30 years after his debut. Album did so bad it outsold Jay’s album that same year’s first week sales. Album was so panned it got 4 1/2 mics in the Source when it dropped and remains to be one of Nas’s highest selling albums in his career. U nikkas crazy. Lol

That nikka gotta be young and going by narratives. Nas was unfairly hated on by critics with IWW. The streets and the people loved it tho. I Am did better critically than IWW did. nikkas is goofy. Lol
