ILLmatic XXV (4/19/94-4/19/19)

We In Here........That's right, 25 f*ckin years later. We still Here. I've had "ILLmatic" on CD, Cass, Vinyl. Also brought the 10th Anniversary Silver cover wit the bonus disc. Copped the 20th Anniversary with the B-Sides and remixes and last year copped the Orchestra Version from Washington DC. I also have the "Time is ILLmatic" documentary as well. It's amazing to grow with him all these years as an artist. Congrats Mr. Nasir. We still here, We still with you since BBQ.

I get annoyed by the on going narrative that I Am... was trash cause it didn’t have tracks from the lost tapes on it, when in fact it’s better than every Nas album post stillmatic.

I agree that is underrated and I would put it over most of Nas' later albums. But that being said, it's a 4 mic album that arguably coulda been his best album if so much heat hadn't got left off.

I'd probably take Life is Good and God Son over it and I put it on par with Hip Hop is Dead. But I get why you say that, its more prime and he was poppin popping era Nas and more Nas as a young street poet with fly nikka ambitions. Whereas 2000s Nas was elderly statesman and sometimes perhaps more preachy for some and that might have gotten in the way of him just being Nas from Queens (though personally I liked him more as an ambassador for Hip Hop even if that came with perceived flaws)

I’m sick of illmatic at this point. I understand that it’s the 25th anniversary but got damn, he’s been performing and celebrating the 20th anniversary for what seems like an eternity now, basically since promo for LIG stopped. I wanna hear NEW music..

After 25 years Im tired of illmatic tributes I bought the album a dozen times seen multiple documentaries.. yes the album is classic but NaS contribution is so much more than just iLLmatic. I too have been loving his new music wish he would just focus on that.

It’s not just about new music for me but I really do think he needs to show more appreciation towards his other bodies of work. I would love to see IWW get this type of love. shyt. Even Stillmatic or Lost Tapes at this point.

Came here to kinda echo what y'all saying

A lot of the recent illmatic tributes and celebrations for both the 20th and 25th anniversary have also come from Mass Appeal and Sacha at the helm too. He was at Ego Trip back in the day and of course they are part of that era of championing Illmatic for the underground while being crushed by other stuff. Obviously Nas didnt do a lot when it was the 10th and 15th Anniversary so his team wanna really give it the cultural tributes it deserves

But as they've given Illmatic the legacy treatment it naturally warrant, I do feel its come at the expense of his other albums being remembered. And know I wonder if young people feel like he's milking it.

Young people just getting into Hip Hop this decade have obviously been checking out these tributes and celebrations and they seetheir favourite music bloggers and purists who've probably put them on credible music to get into like Kanye and Kendrick and they hail Illmatic.. And you sense they are responding to it , Illmatic earned another platinum certification this past January and a couple of singles went Gold finally and it got like 200 mil streams last year

But they also believe them when they say the rest of his catalogue is inconsistent and not as celebratory worthy (Which is bullshyt but we all knew music bloggers who' did that in the 90s and 00s)
What Ive noticed especially on twitter more people especially the young really into Hip Hop fans (the rate my music types) dismiss Nas discgraphy and prop up Illmatic. They'll still put him in GOAT talk and will even say Illmatic is the GOAT album but they feel real comfortable saying so and so passed Nas up cause they got better albums (Kendrick) Mostly for Sonic sound purposes.

This is why I kinda find celebrations of the album bittersweet.

Do you celebrate the album or the launch of the man's career?

Give the other albums the flowers they deserve too

That’s not what it is. And it’s not really about new music either. It’s the fact that it comes of as that album is his only great album and musical achievement. His career is much more than that.

for his fans it's not his only great one but as far as place in hip hop HISTORY none of his other albums are top 30 (i know some people would argue iww but nas is coming)

the fact that people are complaining NOW, in this exact moment is what's wack to me. celebrat today and complain next week about how you'd like a dre remix of their first collabo to redeem himself on IAMXX

can someone explain to me how in the world one subpar track could question the greatness of a album ? :what: it's like blueprint don't have hola hovito, all eyes on me don't have whatz your phone number. there's a lot of joint I don't listen/like on classic albums

it's like sayin illmatic aint a classic because of one time 4 your mind (which is a good track, just not on the level of the others). and nas is coming catch heat only because dre produced it and people were disapointed. but the beat ain't nothin particularly horrible about it and nas spit fire on it which makes it an average track, no more no less.

Only Nas got held to weird ass high standards, nikkaz need to stop listen to officer vlad :beli:
