No, you have it backwards sir. This is going to alienate independents and even some Republicans when the average citizen learns all the details of the Ryan plan.
Regarding that "getting the base excited" stuff, that's always a bunch of overvalued bullshyt. Pretty much every Republican is going to vote for Romney just like pretty much every Democrat voted for Kerry. The base of each party is only about 30% of the electorate each, respectively.
The Ryan plan is radical as fukk...waaaay outside of the American mainstream. He wants to eliminate capital gains tax, the alternative minimum tax, and the estate tax, cut the corporate tax rate, privatize social security and and privatize medicare. We'll see how "center-right" this country is when privatizing Medicare and social security goes on the table. The Ryan plan is so far to the right even some Republicans ran away from it when they campaigned.
Hey, I won't argue this point anymore. Energizing a base isn't that overvalued, not every voter is deadset on who they want to vote for. You can assume that, but it just isn't true, and someone like Ryan can either kill it or make it for Romney. Republicans love the dude though, he has a 46% favorability rating with Repubs which is pretty high. It'll get them excited, esp. the younger voters since Ryan is like 20 years younger than Romney.
And I won't disagree with your second paragraph. That's why I'm interested to see what happens when the facts are laid out on the table and the publics becomes better informed as to Ryan's crazy ass ideas.
It's a bold pick. But I don't see the slam dunk for Obama that you all see.
