Since they made a point to mention that no new mutants were being naturally born, they could make a solo X-23 film adapting the Messiah Complex story about the 1st natural-born Mutant to pop up in years.
They kinda hinted that Wolverine was going to die at the end of the movie when it was revealed that the Adamantium was poisoning Logan's body. Adamantium poisoning Wolverine to the point that his healing factor was over-taxed, is lifted straight out the of "Death of Wolverine" story.

...irrc Hugh made this decision before they even started filming,im 100% sure hes rethinking this right now.
?i get your analogy,but wouldnt this be more like Tom Brady retiring after winning a Superbowl?why quit when he just proved he still has it to play Logan,an added addition people love to bring a new direction and spark to the franchise.new found freedom with the R rating,and the director finally hitting his stride,and we can agree each Wolverine movie has gotten progressivley better.
