Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker Movie ‘Doesn’t Follow Anything’ From The Comics – Exclusive Image

Sometimes he’s the man beneath the Red Hood. In some instances he's a wannabe-comedian who took a tumble into a toxic vat of Ace Chemicals. In Tim Burton’s _Batman_ he's the killer of Bruce Wayne’s parents. And soon, we’re going to get a whole new origin story for one of the most iconic characters of all time – in comics, in films, in popular culture full-stop – in Todd Phillips’ _Joker_. A radical new take on the Clown Prince of Crime, inspired by Scorsese and the hard-edged urban cinema of the 1970s, this time it’s Joaquin Phoenix under the happy-face make-up – and it’s an incarnation that breaks all the rules around the ultimate rule-breaking character.

The August 2019 issue of _Empire_ – on sale from Thursday 11 July – takes a world-exclusive look inside the low-budget, hyper-intense comic book movie – and according to Phillips, it’s going to be its own unique beast. “We didn’t follow anything from the comic-books, which people are gonna be mad about,” the writer-director tells Empire. “We just wrote our own version of where a guy like Joker might come from. That’s what was interesting to me. We’re not even doing Joker, but the story of becoming Joker. It’s about this man.”

That man is Arthur Fleck – a vulnerable, damaged man who will eventually, inevitably, become the card-carrying psychopathic criminal who strikes out at Gotham City. And for the filmmakers, Phoenix was always the man for the role. “I think he’s the greatest actor,” says Phillips. “We had a photo of him above our computer while we were writing. We constantly thought, ‘God, imagine if Joaquin actually does this.’” We won't have to imagine – we'll see the finished film in all its glory in UK cinemas from 4 October.

Yeah, the 'disregarding the comics to put my own spin on it' approach is a very slippery slope.

Can be. But even different comics have disregarded one origin in favor of another or made up their own. That’s the beauty of a one off story. Superman year one, which I’m sure frank miller is probably writing very badly, is its own thing. Killing joke was its own thing and became lore even though that wasn’t the intent. Dark knight returns disregarded years of Batman and Superman being friends and teammates in order to make them enemies and make Superman a puppet of the government, which he wouldn’t be.

So I don’t see it as slippery; it’s par for the course. I just watched a Spider-Man movie where his spider sense is referred to as peter tingle, he built his suit on a stark jet, and other things I can’t say without spoiling lol. It’s less about being true to the beat by beat of the comic and being true to the character and core essence.

I might be alone in this, but the idea of an original story - especially with this character - is kind of intriguing.:manny:

It's a bit like we're getting a full length movie of "Ya wanna know how I got these scars? :mjlit::demonic::shaq:"

The idea of The Joker being the hero, because it's told from his perspective is :ohhh:.

I'll be :obama:if we get a 'Usual Suspects' type reveal that everything we've seen is :duck:, at the end of the flick

I read most of the script, it's pretty good :ehh: the movie isn't a "Gamers Rise Up!" film either despite what some cats have been saying. I believe their were 3 different endings but I like the one they went with.

Also I don't get the problem with not following the comics when Joker doesn't have a definite origin to begin with unlike Superman, Peter Parker, Batman etc.

:snoop: Not that it can't work but making up a new story entirely is just a really unnecessary heavy lift that brings down the percentages of it being well received.

This is the most DC thing they could do. Elseworld and Vertigo are the one thing DC always had over Marvel.

What’s bad about adapting what DC is good at.

If someone does Red Son.. I’ll be first in line.
