Really liked the Atom Eve special so I decided to rewatch the first season.

Nolan really told Mark he got love for his mom the same way he would a pet.

I enjoyed the Atom Eve special when I first watched it.
But it prompted me to re-watch the entire season from the start.
Then, when I finished the season and it started to re-play the special it was actually really tedious to get through. I think part of it is that the "stakes" are so much lower than where the show left off.

It's like going straight from "Akira in Neo-Chicago" to "random episodic pre-teen cartoon episode".

It's because while the special is good on first watch, it doesn't hold up because when you think about it, there are absolutely no stakes. You know that she's not dead, so she's never in any real danger. It's a pretty fun watch, and is nice to hold people over, but ultimately, if this was a series of flashbacks tucked into episodes next season instead, I wouldn't have been mad at it.
