But basically, even the honorable will eventually succumb to outlaw ways during a war. Prolonged war turns normal men and women into savages, or broken men. The Brotherhood started off fighting for the people, but years have passed, most of the original members are likely dead, and the nature of war has corrupted their values. What once probably was "can you spare some food for your local independent knights?" has turned into "Can you spare some food for your local independent knights?"
Same words but shyt has clearly changed. A similar thing happened with the Night's Watch. Once an honorable institution, now a camp for rapists and murderers, yet they wear the same clothes and speak the same oaths sworn by the "respected" brothers before them.
