to the folks who read the books was Ned Stark and Robert great warriors when they were younger? How great were they?

going back to season 1 who do you think would have won the fight between Jamie and Ned if it wasn't stopped?

Robert was a well-above-average fighter, but Ned was just average. In the show, they made Ned above average and able to go toe to toe with Jaime because they wanted a good fight scene, but by the book's standards, he would have lost. Ned's strengths were his leadership and his abilities as a commander on the battlefield, not mention his strength of character. He had his northmen's loyalty out of sheer respect and trust, not just duty, which isn't something most Lords can say in the books.

Brandon Stark (who is long dead when the series begins,) Ned's brother, was considered the great warrior of the Stark family in Ned's generation.

:wtb: Nah fam, Robert was a BEAST of a man in his younger years, caveing peoples chest in with the war-hammer fam, and while Ned wasn't as good as Brandon he was still and above average fighter, but he was prolly a better tactician but that was never touched on. Its not that Ned and them are bad or average...its that Jamie, the Cleganes, Barristan, Garlan Tyrell, Khal Drogo...were THAT good..

"Who would win a boxing match" vs "Who would win a street fight"

I hear Ned Stark, I see Ned Stark
I see a dude that will bite your god damn face off like that zombie in florida
just to win the fight

Edit : NM, found it.

http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Ice

Seems like Tywin Da Gawd ended up with Ice, and than ended up having it melted down into two swords and given to Joffrey and Jamie.

Edit 2 : But THIS cat was the one carrying it for awhile? This series be killing me brehs, even minor characters in the show be having these long backstories in the books.

The author of the book said in an interview that Ned was an acerage swordsman but a master tactician. Brandon, his brother, was the swordsman of the family

The books are based on a lot of historical events.

IMO, both in their prime Jaime would win against Ned. He's forte seems to be one on one fighting.

Robert wasn't a swordsmen (he carried a warhammer) but he was good enough to shatter one of the best Knights (Rhaegar) in combat. Arthur Dayne (best knight of his generation) said Rhaegar was pretty good and one of the finest he's seen.

It's hard to guage Ned's skill because when he went to fight Arthur Dayne and two other Kingsguard Knights, Ned had six people with him. Everyone got killed except Ned and one dude (Howland Reed) who saved his life. Ned is a great tactician and has a whole lot of war experience though.

thanks it's good to get some battle prowess on the late great Ned Stark :rip:
i remember a couple episodes back the scene with jamie and breanne he was like there's only three people who could go toe to toe with him
any idea about the three he was referring to?

I haven't read the books, but having seen an old Ned Stark go toe to toe with a prime Jaime I don't understand why anyone doesn't think a prime Ned would beat a prime Jaime

Because Jaime Lannister is one of the greatest warriors in Westeros and Ned Stark isn't on that level.

If the TV show made you think Ned could do anything more than just hang for a short time against the Kingslayer, then they messed that fight up. I don't think they did though - if you watch that scene, Jaime is fighting ned with the :smugfavre: face. He's the type to let the other guy hang for a while because he enjoys the thrill of combat.

The dude that stabbed Ned in the back of the leg saved his life. Jaime knocked that guy out for spoiling his fun.

Watch it again

just look at how labored and intense Ned looked and Jamie the whole time was like :smugfavre:

Even Theon said dude cut through like 5 men before Robb and the others could capture him...and thats not counting all the men he already prolly killed in that battle.

If we're talking about the TV show then sure. But that scene never happened in the books. Ned never fought anyone in the books.

Here is a quote from the author of the book:

December 15, 2000
About Benjen Stark

I was wondering if you would comment on Benjen Stark's fighting ability. Is he on a level with Brandon, or is he more like Ned?

Depends on the kind of fight you had in mind.

Brandon was the best of the Starks with sword in hand, and the best jouster as well. But Benjen has other skills that serve him well as a ranger... and Ned was likely the best battle commander.
The Citadel: So Spake Martin - About Benjen Stark

Also, Sansa has a memory about Bronze Yohn Royce (a character that will be introduced later) beating Ned and Ser Rodrik at the same time back in the day at Winterfell.
