EVO isn't big in the grand scheme of the industry tho, that's the thing. FGC has ALWAYS been basically the most niche competitive scene in gaming. Shooters/FPSes, RTSes, MOBAs have all always eclipsed it, from talent pool/player count to sponsorship, advertising, league circuits, etc. That's not to defend the Dana White UFC level penny pinching they pay their players, $12k for winning the entire tourney is absolutely an unacceptable disgrace, pre AND post Sony acquisition. But FGC diehards have always had an inaccurate, outsized perception of their place in gaming as a whole. Thinking Street Fighter is the end all be all of competitive activity throughout the entirety of gaming... when in reality the "fake" and "party games" Smash and MK eclipse Street Fighter's total sales as a franchise by over 20 million each. And when games like Unreal and Starcraft have had official pro leagues dating back to the 90s... while Street Fighter took until 2014 to get Capcom Cup Pro Tour (which obviously pays NOTHING compared to top MOBA leagues nowadays). EVO's biggest all time viewership and engagement throughout it's 20 year history is a drop in the bucket compared to say the LoL World Championships which has maxed out at over 70 million concurrent viewers during it's biggest finals.
There's staggering levels to this shyt, and unless you're getting an unprecedented, continuous Saudi backed stimulus over years and years... EVO and the FGC it represents are gonna remain at or near the bottom level at the end of the day. Sony buying historically low on it during the pandemic downturn was never going to translate into historic new sponsorship and financing for the players like some were holding out hope for.

Like the peak number of players who've played SF6 was roughly ~80k in a single night right when the game released and it's been peaking at around 30k per day the last week.
League of Legends saw 35 million players for a single day in March 2024. That's dang near 1 out-of-every 200 people in the world playing the game that day. 130 million monthly users on average so far this year.

Some old FGC heads/diehards been ambivalent and dismissive of it... but "Project L" finally releasing and enjoying at least a similar level of success as Valorant would do wonders for the scene as a whole. It's nothing compared to League (which is frankly an outlier monstrosity I still can't fully fathom
) but still having that boost from the Riot "pro" ecosystem getting integrated into and mingling with the FGC in terms of viewers, players, sponsors, leagues, etc. can only be a good thing I think if you want the scene to grow in a sustainable and meaningful way.

Like I mentioned in the other post, Faker was offered $20 mil/year to sign with a team when he was a free agent but he turned it down. That was back in 2022, but dude stuck with his team and won a Championship and is still only 27 today
Right now that cat is basically a public enemy in China because of their rivalry with Korea and the fact he didn't sign with them while China has the three best teams around the world. It's really on some sports shyt over there. Except imagine someone being greater than what Messi was to soccer. For awhile dude was the youngest player to ever win a World Championship and now he's the oldest player to win a World Championship. It's only more animosity as dude has dropped so many daggers and monstrous plays on all these peoples' favorite teams who really want to see him lose.
