a bit different from some random dude growing up in some random town who can shoot ice or fire from his hands, or lasers from his eyes, Von Struckers name rings bells but nobody ever heard of a magneto? you got people like Nick Fury & Shield tracking down any kind of super human for decades but not a single one of these thousands of mutants made any kind of ripple?...ever?...got it

In the movies, wasn't that the case? The general public found out about Mutants in DOFP when magneto and beast started tussling and it was caught on camera.

Other than that, the gen pop didn't know they existed.

And in fact, the public found out about mutants earlier than they did in the original timeline due to Wolverine screwing up the past.

Xavier the most powerful mutant mind on the planet can't make folks forget?

Even in the animated series, folks didn't find out Xavier was a mutant until literally the last episode and the only reason they found out then was cause somebody attacked him and he never recovered to wipe folks minds clean
