This is written by the same guy that did 1-4.
Probably, since the original writer wanted the last scene of the final season to show Dexter on death row being executed, and then you realize everything prior to that was just flash backs.
But he left after season 4 and didn't expect the show to go past 5, maybe 6 seasons total so he probably changed the ending now.

Now I'm tempted to rewatch the first 4 seasons. I remember not liking season 3, but it has been so long I barely remember what happened.

In 2021 I’ll admit his character would be laughed off so say what you will but for the time it was. His character clearly over the top but highly entertaining and “very Miami machismo” which I can get Bc I grew up and live here. You had to just let some things go but Smits made the character his own. I love season 3. All of the first 4 are simply classics. And I can’t wait for the OG show runner to do this justice.
