I did bell peppers last year in my raised bed, and the amount of space didn’t justify the amount of time it took to produce, or the small amount of peppers. So I gave up on them this year. The grow bags might be another option

Yea bell peppers are tricky I grew one last year think I got like 10? peppers from it

any of you compost? i have like 4 bins. my city (orlando) gives them to residents within the city limits for free. suppose to be one per household but few actually utilize it that if you want more they'll give it to you (deliver it to your house).

yea I just restarted my heavy composting up, best advice I can give you is keep your ratios of Brown to greens right

When I was i collected the grass clippings from when we got our grass cut, our landscape guy would just leave the grass in rows and i would take them after a day or so of it drying up. I'd add food then grasss and soil and turn it every now and then. The next year it was rich and served me well for planting. That year I tried refilling but I got the mix right, as @newarkhiphop said, and the volume decreased considerably while I was making it. A mulberry tree is now growing out of that bin so it's no longer a compost pile unfortunately but a big ass pot. Full circle though.

Definitely take advantage of all that you can.

Last year I used to get coffee from the local coffee spot, added some fungus in there that was growing off of a fallen tree branch, and then added water to let it get really active. I added the water after I spread out the coffee grounds.

A couple of weeks later I happened upon a bin and seeded that bin with some soil and the coffee fungus mix. It really took off and later in the summer we received about maybe 100lbs of food waste from a vegan spot and all that got turned into black gold in about 2mos. It was amazing.

i've been composting for about a decade now, was just wondering after reading the posts about buying soil.

yeah i get coffee grounds from starbucks, never tried adding fungus to it though. i'll try that.

i actually like maggots in my bins alot of people are grossed about by them, but they break down organic material faster than the earthworms and the waste byproduct is the same.

The black soldier fly maggots are the absolute best, but with a decade of experience composting you probably already know that. Share some strategies breh!!

Just planted my flowers in front

Put up my hanging baskets

I got green plants this year instead of flowers, and I chained them to the columns on the porch so the plant bandit can’t strike this year

Planted a small Roma tomato plant, and I had a larger cherry tomato plant that I BROKE when taking it out the pot.

:damn:

I’m hoping it will root from the Branch I planted in addition to the main root I planted. It had flowers already.

:mjcry:

I ordered one of these for my herbs

Those cherry tomatoes with fresh basil, thyme, and rosemary with garlic, olive oil, over pasta is

:ohlawd:

I also ordered another raised bed for more tomatoes, because I’m obsessed.

Interesting, I need to try composting again, I never got into it really. Funny story: the one time I tried, I was going to use an old plastic trash can so I set it out but hadn't made holes for water to drain, etc. It rained the next day and filled with water.

I was out with my then real young son playing and he said: "Daddy is that poop in there?" I looked in the can and a squirrel had fallen in and drowned :mjlol:Its bloated ass was just floating there. Man that was gross to clean up by I need to try again.

Garden confessions: Sometimes I’m afraid to pick my tomatoes b/c I see some pretty scary looking mofos on em.:damn:

I hate bugs:mjcry:

I spray neem oil on them at sundown. And sometimes I put cayenne pepper on them to keep the critters away.

:jbhmm: What about diatomaceous earth? Does that really work?

but Home Depot doesn’t deliver soil and mulch

I had to get my soil from Amazon. :martin:

The jury is still out on mulch. Does anybody here have experience with colored mulch? It can get really windy here at times (ie, possible tornado here today :beli:) and them lil wood chips ain't gon cut it. So i started looking at rocks, saw they come in colors, researched effects, etc.

I was thinking about the white rocks (+shade) for greens; red rocks for peppers and tomatoes (supposedly increases production). :jbhmm:

I ended up ordering soil directly from Miracle Gro, but that was 2 weeks ago, and they just sent the shipped email on Friday, so it’s going to be a while.

I read that rubber mulch is actually good because you’ll get less weeds. So I bought a bag of that from Lowe’s while standing in a long ass line spaced apart.

Yeah mulch can help with the weeds but I am too lazy or forget each year. You need to put it out early typically before the weed seeds have a chance to sprout. Some will still poke through but you can yank them out. If you tarp in late fall/early winter and mulch in late winter early spring you can control weeds well I hear.

Has anybody tried growing vegetables hydroponically? I'm really into hydroponics, all of my houseplants are planted that way, although I've never grown vegetables period so I'm not sure how it would work.
