I have a question with collards and cabbage. I’m creating potting soil, I have garden soil, dessert sand, cow manure, coco coir, and perlite.

What combination should I use and also at what ratios?

I also got got put out of business by squirrels on my seedlings last year, does anyone have any tips for combating against them?

I have garden soil that I reuse a few years in a row with cow manure put on a week or two before planting to put the minerals back in. Not sure what sand and the other stuff can do but that doesn't mean it won't help, I'm just not familiar.

Squirrels are hard because they aren't deterred by fences. I have heard a spray of 1 part apple cider vinegar and 3 parts water with cayenne pepper mixed in sprayed on the plants helps deter them.

I think I'm going to go in trying to grow mushrooms in all this time. Since I'm with my girl at her apt. Dont have access to my yard and even then deer are emboldened right now and will come up outta rock creek park and munch on everything I'm growing.

Gonna try and grow them from the grocery store after I buy a kit and see what that looks like day by day. I love growing plants from the grocery store.

@repciprocity :salute:

:jbhmm: In what kinda proportions? I have some instructions on the fertilizer, but how do you think i should balance the soil vs coconut coir? Equal?

I ask bc people be sounding like you can't even use soil in container planting. :comeon:

I personally only use garden soil with at most about 1/4 or 1/5 cow manure for extra nutrients. That has served me well over the years. The others stuff could work but I haven't used it.

What about hardware cloth?

Hardware cloth works for rabbits and sometimes woodchucks but you need part of it underground. If you have a rabbit/woodchuck issue, setting up the hardware cloth you need to dig a trench of sorts and have it sticking 3-6" in the ground around the perimeter to prevent the animals from digging under it which they will do.

Squirrels are a wild card since they can climb readily. I honestly have never had a huge issue with squirrels in my garden even though there are plenty in our backyard area. In the past I have read people sprinkling cayenne pepper on plants, setting out alternate food for them away from the garden, or trapping them and releasing them.

Woodchucks will destroy your garden in a day or two if they get in. Years ago, when I had a woodchuck problem in the community garden I was at I lined the inside perimeter with cardboard with broken glass glued on top. Woodchucks stopped coming but the animal lovers complained and made me remove it :scust: Can't do that again though now I have kids.

Do mostly soil, the coco coir is there really to create some channels and pockets for air and it can hold nutrients also. Maybe like 4:1 soil:coir. A lot of people impose what works for them on to you but you know your technique and your plants best.
