I've been enjoying this season for what it is. A continuation of the come-up. As with life, there is progress. What started out on the sofa outside in the ATL hood has progressed over to Europe with success. When that experience happens, the subject matter goes beyond hood ish. It's about perspective and Donald Glover is showing you a bit of his, since experiencing some success from Stone Mountain to global.
We saw how things progressed in the first two seasons, even with how season 2 ended and what it took for Earn to even board that plane to Europe. Earn hasn't always made the right decisions, or his decisions didn't always work out, but he's always had his cousin Al's (Paper Boy) back. Remember, it was Earn who scraped together his last little bit of coins to pay the night radio station DJ to play Paper Boy's track. During the first season, even after the cell phone to samurai sword to dog breeding come up with Darius, after hitting off Van with some loot for Lottie and her, rather than staying there, he slept in a storage unit. That's not a dude finessing his folks. So to see him bossing up in Europe and holding Al, Darius and Van down regardless of whatever comes, it's full circle. Salute the dude.
Now this episode definitely was the Euro version of The Woods (the anniversary of his Al's moms death) and FUBU, with "Lorraine" being the spiritual guide through his Nepalese space cake trip. Having been to Amsterdam myself, and recognizing some of the scenery, it was the perfect backdrop for this type of trip. Amsterdam is a really cool place to visit. I think Al's high began when Stereolab dropped, but he nor we realized it. From the sick rat, to the kids chasing him, to the Liam Nielson convo, and then "Lorraine" basically channeling the same energy that his moms (named Lorraine) did in The Woods and FUBU, Al was going through the same anxieties that he had in that episode. The difference is, now they've actually leveled up.
Coming full circle, Earn found Al laid out in the street, took care of his cousin in his luxury hotel suite in Amsterdam, and eased his mind on his royalties, after he woke up from his trip. Like the end of FUBU, these cousins are bound together. They are really all they got.
One last thing. I like the one-off episodes. They are well layered and intentional. Donald Glover finessed FX to touch on our daily experience topics that he probably always wanted to. These are things that The Boondocks used to do, but he's taking it further since the bag is already secured. Allow it.
