Google Play Carrier Billing for Verizon Goes Live

verizon-account-billing-365x650.jpeg

If you are a Verizon customer and own an Android phone, you can start charging Google Play store purchases directly to your Verizon account. It’s called carrier billing, something we first reported a few weeks back which was then confirmed to be on the way by Google Play.

This new service doesn’t require that you do anything on your end, other than making sure you switch the payment method upon checkout to “Bill my Verizon Wireless account” should you want to rid your life of credit cards. From what we understand, there is a $25 limit on purchases during a billing cycle. So there are some boundaries, but overall, this is a new option for those without credit cards.

MetroPCS announces Joyn, a standards-based iMessage and FaceTime competitor

this is essentially a competitor to iMessage that will include delivery confirmation and message composition alerts. The big plus here is that these messages won't count as standard SMS messages, just like iMessage. Wi-Fi and video calling are fairly self-explanatory — users can place voice and video calls when connected to a Wi-Fi network, making this a decent proxy to FaceTime.

Joyn's "content sharing" features also sound reasonably fun and useful, though hardly essential. MetroPCS says you can "bring calls and chats to life" by sharing videos, images, and files while on a call or through instant messaging; there are also some location-sharing features as well to help you find people you may be communicating with. Lastly, "contacts presence" will add some status alerts for your phone book, letting you see if your contacts are available, busy, away, or unavailable, much like how Android integrates Google Talk statuses into its People app.

Google pushing for Android developers to pay more attention to tablets

The Samsung-made Nexus 10 is certainly a feast for the eyes, especially with that beautiful 2560×1600 display. There’s just one problem: there aren’t many Android developers who fine tune their apps for use on tablets. Instead of making a version of their app for Android tablets, a number of developers will just blow up their smartphone apps, which doesn’t exactly make for the prettiest of experiences. Google is looking to change that, urging developers to focus on the tablet experience when it comes to their apps.

“We’d like developers to think more and more about great tablet experiences. There’s a lot of really good Android tablets out there now,” Google mobile product manager Robert Hamilton said in an interview with The Guardian. “The Nexus 10 is a world-class device that we think will be really successful, so we want more people to take advantage of the tools that Android provides for developers to think about what their tablet experience is.” Hamilton said that some developers are already putting in the effort to make their apps look and run great on tablets, which is definitely an encouraging thing to hear.

According to him, the launch of the Nexus 7 was what made some developers really sit down and think about how they can improve user experience on tablets. Given the Nexus 7′s immense popularity, we have no problem believing his claims. If the Nexus 10 turns out to be as bit as Google hopes, then it stands to reason that even more developers will begin to think about they make their apps better on tablets.

Of course, at the end of the day it’s all about making money, and at the moment, there are many more Android smartphone owners than there are Android tablet owners. With the Nexus 7, we saw Android tablet mania hit in a big way, so if Google can repeat that success with the Nexus 10, it should do a lot convince developers that a significant number of consumers are using Android tablets. We shall see if the Nexus 10 can top the Nexus 7 in terms of popularity soon enough, as the tablet is scheduled to launch on November 13 – are you picking one up?

Google research pane for Docs adds personal content, integration with Presentation and Drawing

Building off of the web search capabilities of its research pane for Docs, Google is now giving users the ability to search for and insert their own personal content. For example, if you're working on a presentation in Drive and want to add a photo from your Picasa album, or a quote from a friend's Google+ profile, you'll now have the option of adding personal content from within the research pane without leaving your project. This new search feature pulls information from your personal Picasa albums, Drive and Google+ accounts, and users will also find that the research pane has been extended to Presentation and Drawings. Unfortunately, Google Apps customers will still be limited to web-only search results, as personal content search is intended for individual accounts. However, if you're a starving student heavily embedded in Google's ecosystem, this time saver just might shave a few minutes off of your weekend cram session and that's always a good thing.

You can toggle hd over cellular in settings. But yeah, those hd vids absolutely devour data.

RBK/ @Rohiggidy , I need a comeup on an S3.

I see some deals on the Evo LTE. Gonna save my upgrade till next year, but I need a new phone now. My Nexus S slowing down big time with 4.1.1 and the newer apps.

Find someone trading a s2 plus cash for a s3. Got my s3 like new with box for 120+ a s2.

I'm hoping I can come up on a GS3 or Galaxy Nexus on craigs. That way I can use that till the end of next year and hopefully the Nexus 5 will be on all carriers.
