This is a really good documentary about how governement involvement fukked the local farming industry in Jamaica and it has happened here too. The government isn't concerned about more food so people can eat, they are concerned about the amount of profit they can gain from the large quantities of food.

Life and Debt (trailer) - YouTube

I understand that as well. We live in a capitalistic society NOTHING gets done unless someone is making money off of it. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't support advancements that could help the human race. Like I said before plenty of money gets spent and made for plenty of reasons. I've never understood why people go so hard at things that COULD help poor people.

*Walks in* *Sees a bunch of people who haven't read the provision, don't know how it got in there, or what it does complaining* *Sees Obama's name used for effect, ignoring where in the bill this provision was actually placed and that Obama had no part in writing this bill and likely didn't know shyt about this provision*

Basically it takes away the ability of courts to grant injunctions if they feel that a review by the Secretary of Agriculture over such a plant is warranted over health and safety concerns. This doesn't mean the Secretary of Agriculture is about to sit there and approve everything. It just means that while a review is taking place, the courts no longer have the power to issue injunctions. I hate riders as much as the next person but this was snuck into an appropriations bill to avoid a government shut down and will be in existence for all of 6 months as Tester, Mikulski and others have already said it won't be in there in the future. It's already being disputed if Mikulski is even responsible for it. :snoop:

*Walks out shaking his head at about 99% of the people involved in this thread, with example 10,000 of why "very progressive" and "very liberal" people are as sometimes as sensationalist as hyper-conservatives*

Monsanto is notable for its involvement in high profile lawsuits, as both plaintiff and defendant. It has been involved in a number of class action suits, where fines and damages have run into the hundreds of millions of dollars, usually over health issues related to its products.

:whew: Good to know the food supply will be in such capable hands.

In a case that ran from February 1984 through October 1987, Monsanto was the defendant in the longest civil jury trial in U.S. history, Kemner v. Monsanto. The case involved a group of plaintiffs who claimed to have been poisoned by dioxin in 1979 when a train derailed in Sturgeon, Missouri. Tank cars on the train carried a chemical used to make wood preservatives and "small quantities of a dioxin called 2, 3, 7, 8, TCDD... formed as a part of the manufacturing process."[157] The initial outcome was mixed. "The jurors, after deliberating more than two months, agreed with Monsanto that the plaintiffs had suffered no physical harm from exposure to dioxin. But they accepted the plaintiffs' argument that Monsanto had failed to alter its manufacturing process to eliminate dioxin as a byproduct and that it had failed to warn the public about dioxin's harmfulness. Most of the plaintiffs were awarded only one dollar each for actual losses, but they were awarded $16.2 million in punitive damages."[158] Monsanto appealed the judgements and won on all counts.

Shouldn't have been near the railroad track, fakkits! :pacspit:

In 2003, Monsanto reached a $300 million settlement with people in Alabama affected by the manufacturing and dumping of the toxic chemical polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).

Who cares? It's only Alabama, right? :manny:

As in much of the developing world and especially in agricultural areas, child labor is widespread in India's agricultural sector, which employs ~60% of India's child labor. Child labor is especially used in seed production.[230] The seed production is done mostly through child labor—it is carried out on plots owned by small farmers, who sell the seed to "seed organizers", who in turn sell the seed to public and private seed agencies and companies.[230] The public and private agencies and companies include Indian state corporations, Mahyco-Monsanto, Syngenta, and others.[231] Monsanto's website states that the company complies with all child labor laws and that they are working towards minimizing its occurrence.

Monsanto is bringing the 80's back. :win: The 1880s that is. :youngsabo:

Agent Orange is the combination of the code names for Herbicide Orange (HO) and Agent LNX, one of the herbicides and defoliants used by the U.S. military as part of its chemical warfare program, Operation Ranch Hand, during the Vietnam War from 1961 to 1971. Vietnam estimates 400,000 people were killed or maimed, and 500,000 children born with birth defects as a result of its use.[1] The Red Cross of Vietnam estimates that up to 1 million people are disabled or have health problems due to Agent Orange.[2]
A 50:50 mixture of 2,4,5-T and 2,4-D, it was manufactured for the U.S. Department of Defense primarily by Monsanto Corporation and Dow Chemical.

Agent Orange? :leon: Sounds like a Red Ribbon Army operative. Or a food coloring agent. Who doesn't want festive colors?

Parents, hide your daughters, Muy Caliente is coming to town. :jawalrus:

So in order to solve this issue, we have to have a discussion on the difference between starving and nutrient deficient?

Well, half of the middle class may be nutritionally deficient, technically that is.

What's strange is that when I was growing up, there were trees that bore fruit on every other block...We had an apple tree in our yard, and my neighbors on each side had a plum and peach tree respectively.....

Down the block, old man Willie had a pecan tree...As kids we ate off of those trees easily until we hit our early teens.....But the strange thing is that these trees haven't beared fruit in over 20 years now...

I have no idea why or what happened

How you gon leave out that this provision protects GMOs from lawsuits if they are ever linked to some type of health issue or terminal illness?

Point to the specific provision, and let me read it. Because I've been on Salon and all these other sites like the International Business Times and that type of stuff is not what I see anyone complaining about. They are all complaining about what I just wrote about and I went and it and was like :why: Let me see that, I'll get at you at like 10 PM or so.

:heh: y'all just find stuff to complain about. Most of the food we eat has been "genetically modified" by man, only difference is this is done in a lab.

The world will starve with our current farming methods and GMO crops are a step in the right direction in preventing that. We always talk about moving into the future, and improving energy, infrastructure, agriculture, etc but when it comes time to do it we get a bunch of people jumping in the way due to their own personal feelings. This is why nothing can get done in this country, cause people will rather complain about how they feel about stuff as opposed to anylizing the real facts and benefits of pursuing certain goals.

Yeah it sucks that this is so closely tied to a big corporation, but that's how things get done in a capitalist society. If the gov. started pursuing things like this on their own, people would be yelling out SOCIALIST.
that's the dumbest shyt i've ever read in my life... MY LIFE.

The fact they they are writing out one branch of government speaks volumes. There are ways to foster change, this isn't one of them. This is fostering a stranglehold on FOOD. Got damn seeds man.

What's to stop MS from creating seeds that kill off other seeds and all we're left with is TWO GENERATION seeds from MS.

How ANYONE can agree with how this was done, why it was done or even the ramifications of this is crazy.

All this shoving non related items into bills shyt has to stop. HAS TO.

Poison pie. That's what this is. They slip a pie through that everyone thinks they want, but it's full of poison.

:whoa: calm down there sir. The sky is not falling. Nobody is gonna monopolize food or kill crops. At worst another corporation gets some goverment money, at best some advancements can be made that will help feed the world. I agree with the shoving extra shyt into bills shyt but that's Washington for you.
