SMH at the anti-drunk driving white knights that would think this is a good idea. .05 is ridiculously low...like, low enough that you wouldn't even feel a buzz most likely. Here are things more distracting that driving with a .05 BAC:

Talking on a cell phone
Texting on a cell phone
Looking at a cell phone
Reaching for a cell phone
Talking to your passengers
Reaching for your kids in the backseat
Having kids in the car, period
Singing along loudly to a song on the radio
Looking at a billboard
Sneezing
Coughing
Yawning
Driving while tired

Get the point?
source? Or should we just take your word for it?

.05 :laff: foh

According to my bac calculator I'm at .066 right now.

I'm cool with stiff penalties if u cause an accident and ur above w/e mandated amount, but punishment where there is no victim :aicmon:
I'd prefer we act proactively to potential deaths then reactively, the original post cited a significant drop in accidents following the lowering of the maximum bac. That alone is enough to prove its worth it IMO.

the real question, which noone seems to even be concerned with, is how many accidents have been caused by people with a BAC of .08. I'd bet the answer is very few.......

and if the answer is indeed very few..........then what exactly does reducing a BAC of .08 to .05 intend to do?

I understand the intent, but by lowering the limit you also increase the pool of people who will be in violation of "the law".

So you increase the number of people caught up, over nothing really. I guess the increase in revenue from fines will make it cool though :smugbiden:

.05 is just a ridiculous limit. I would have to drink less than 1 drink an hour to be below that.

Whats the difference between a .08 and a .05?

the difference is about 1 drink in an hour I think.

As far as impairment according to wiki...

0.030–0.059
Mild euphoria
Relaxation
Joyousness
Talkativeness
Decreased inhibition
Concentration

0.06–0.09 Blunted feelings
Disinhibition
Extroversion
Reasoning
Depth perception
Peripheral vision
Glare recovery

I've pulled over people because they were swerving and their BAC was 0.06.
One drink (glass of wine, pint of beer, shot of liquor) does not take you to 0.05. You have to take into consideration the person's weight and how fast they were drinking.
If you drink a glass of beer, you are going to reach 0.01. If you chug a glass of beer in 20 seconds on an empty stomach, you will reach 0.01 faster, not higher, than if you had a dinner and it drank the beer over a course of 30 minutes.

In police academy, we spent one day where half the glass drank and half the class practiced giving the SFSTs. One beer after an hour took people to 0.009 to 0.011. So, it would take about 5 beers to get to 0.05.

What they are going to have to do is change the SFSTs if they lower the BAC to 0.05. It is much easier to pass the SFST, walking a line, standing with one foot up, at 0.05 than at 0.08.

5-18% drop in fatalities isnt really nothing and the first DUI is a slap on the wrist anyway and after that its the drivers fault for not taking precaution to not get caught again.

Texting is killing more teens than drunk driving

Texting And Driving Kills More Than Drunk Driving | Geekosystem

At this point, it really shouldn’t take another study to show us that texting and driving is not safe. But another study showing that is exactly what we have this week, with a paper published today in the journal Pediatrics showing that texting and driving is now responsible for more car accidents — and more fatalities — among teen drivers than drunk driving.
