I'd say the soul is there. It's just "lighter" sounding than Timbaland's get down tracks, thus makes it sound cleaner in comparison, but still same effect.

This is why I don't really compare artists. As much as Timbaland and the Neptunes get lumped in the same discussion, their sound is different.

I said it before but the way their music hits me I have the impression of Neptunes/Pharrell as a very Spring type of vibe and Timbaland is like the Summer.

I was bumping this Timbo laced track yesterday

and I thought about how "black" this song is:banderas:

Its "urban". Its "black. Its for US. It has "soul". Alot of Timbaland production has "soul". His collaborations with Ginuwine and Aaliyah are full of his most soulful work. Justin Timberlake could never do those songs the same justice as a black artist.

Same with Kanye. I used to rock with Kanye when he was on his "soul" shyt. His Never Change and This Can't Be Life beats for Jay is some of my favorites. And lets not even talk about the entire BE album:ohlawd:

This joint wit Brandy has a very "urban" feel for example:

Neptunes were always my fav producers coming up, but now that I'm older I can't help but to notice how "soulless" the majority of their music is. I just don't "feel" alot of their music.

They have a couple joints that I sorta feel:

But overall, they are the true definition of "pop" producers.

They lack "soul".:ld:

I know what you are trying to say and I'll explain it to you. They lack low-end in their beats.

Most black music rely on low or mid-low frequencies and it carries over to the next generation. It give OUR music that feel.

You can tell the Neptunes have a lot of non-black musical influences because they focus more on the high end and strip down the lows.

Melody-wise, they are probably the best in the genre. Groove-wise not so much.

I first noticed this when Ludacris dropped Southern Hospitality. The song is good but the drums were always off to me. They didn't slam like a regular hip-hop song. It's like they mix their music down for radio or for CD.

Another example here is Fabolous - Young'n. Their lows are weak and very mechanical.

Just for reference Listen to Missy Sock it to me. The kicks are fuller and the mid range bass is more organic.

I think the clipse would have been bigger if they had production focusing more on the lows.

Now we got these lames like Uzi and Yachty with no soul or blackness :mjcry:

After they silenced Lupe I knew the end was near.

Thats exactly what it is. There drums/bass have always been lighter than normal and it takes the swing out of their beats.

They are amazing arangers tho.

I remember listening to "Sock It 2 Me" thinking the whole thing was live because of how it sounded. That song always sounded like a live band was playing.

Great post. Posters like you, @JustCKing keep this place from being an utter cesspool.

That low/mid low shyt is partly why I say Timbaland will slay Pharrell in a battle.
