The goal for the Neptunes as a whole was to sound futuristic and unlike anything you heard. They can do soul and all that and have, but they wanted to blend into any genre and still have you know it was a Neptunes beat.

They still could've achieved that goal and still kept the soul element. Using the OP's Timbaland example, "Pony" and "One In A Million" is futuristic and unlike anything people ever heard, but still kept a trademark Timbo sound. There's music that he's produced that's genre-less because it doesn't quite fit into a genre.

While The Neptunes are also some of my favorite producers, another thing that I've noticed is that they are argued as being more versatile than Tim. I've seen people say they were more so album driven vs. Timbaland being more of a club banger producer. I don't think that's true at all. I would give Timbaland the edge in versatility and producing entire albums. Timbaland has the bulk of Aaliyah's One In A Million, all of Ginuwine's The Bachelor, Missy's Supa Dupa Fly, the majority of Bubba Sparxxx's Deliverance, the majority of 100%. Then with Danja, he went on to do the bulk of Nelly Furtado's Loose and Justin's Futuresex/Lovesounds. In terms of versatility, Tim's worked with some unexpected artists in different genres and done songs that don't sound like typical Timbaland productions.

In regard to Kanye, I feel like his production lost it's soul once his drums/drum programming fell off. I mean, you could loop a dope sample, but the drums and the other elements that are added are more important. A dope sample can be ruined by weak drums/drum programming. What's crazy is it's like he felt his drums were weak because with Graduation, he started outsourcing drum programming to other producers. He even fell back on production with each album and credited himself with additional production.

Timbo was always more hip-hop centric with his production. Timbo made futuristic R&B music. The Neptunes tried to do that with everything. Listen to their NERD stuff. It wasn't confined to any one thing. Timbo could do other genres but it sounds awkward at times

Am I wrong tho?
Yes, you're wrong. Chad is Filipino (aka the n199@5 of Asia) and plays sax. His band instructor said he had the pedigree to be the next kenny g (an anglo but soulful). The Neptunes catalog has plenty of 'soulful' cuts like Jay-Z's Allure, SWV's Use Your Heart, Usher's U Don't Have To Call, Justin T's Senorita (a record of Stevie Wonder's influence), Chad Hugo's work on The Internet's Dontcha, etc.

You expected "urban" and "soul" from a chinese guy and a nikka that calls himself "Skateboard P"?

:patrice::mindblown:
Chad Hugo not Chang Hugo.. boy is clearly not Chinese... And it wouldn't matter if he "had" soul.
Don't act like you ain't never stumble on some obscure foreign samples with hella swagg. It has nothing to do with nationality. Some of the most sampled break beats in hip hop come from the most unlikely of places. I still listen to Bob James Nautilus in amazement. The souls in music comes from the individual not his background.. case in point that Black people are currently making the most soulless music they ever have. In any modern period (reflection of the times)...

So yes I expect the soul in the music from anyone really
