An MC that great I can't hate on him being in anybodys top 5. However in mine his discography works against him, thought he still in my top 10.

No Father To MY Style.. A Son Unique
biggie was one of very few mcs who could do it all. that alone gives him top 5. biggie never came weak. ready 2 die was still a classic before he died, life after death set the commercial hip hop blue print. more versatile than nas and basically every other goat contender.rappers needed 5 albums to even think about touchin big (coughjayzcough) and still havent outshined em

I typed this awhile back, here's why I think Big is the GOAT or at the very least top 5/10:

*His Debut album "Ready To Die" was the last straw that brought the Eastcoast Back on a national level as it had not only critical accliam but commerical success.
*Ready To Die and Life After Death make him the only emcee that can agrued to probably had 2 Top 10 LP's ever in Hip Hop History.
*RTD & LAD created an album forumla that is still being used till this day of mixing street/hardcore rhymes with mainstream production. Biggie created the album formula that attempted to appeal to every type of rap fan.
*He's one of the most bitten, sampled and emulated emcees of all time.
*Worked with artist of and is respected in All Four Coast.
*Revolutionaize the Hip Hop Club Record by still being able to appeal to the streets.
*"Juicy" is unversially accepted as a Top 10 rap song of all time with the likes of "The Message", "Rapper's Delight" and "Dear Momma".
*"Big Poppa" and "One More Chance" are considered two of the greatest rap club records.
*In 4 Years 94-97 He Wrote, Executive Produced and Produced on 5 different LP's, 5 Albums: "Ready To Die, Life After Death (Double LP), Conspiracy, Hard Core and No Way Out"
*His 1st 7 singles were all Classic Rap songs (Party and Bullshyt, Juicy, Big Poppa, One More Chance Remix, Hypnotize, Mo Money Mo Problems, Sky's The Limit)
*Was the 1st official crowned King of New York and New York is the Mecca of Hip Hop.
*Changed Female Hip Hop by introducing Lil Kilm and helping her with writing and producing "Hard Core" which took females away from acting and dressing like dudes to being sexy.
*Made Bad Boy Records one of the most iconic and successful Labels in Rap History.
*Had Hip Hop 1st ever Bio-Picture made about his life.
*Took non-rapping dudes from his Hood and got them a Gold Album, Gold Single (Playa's Anthem) and Platinum single (Get Money) and wrote for all them with Junior Mafia "Conspiracy" LP.
*Respected by musicians in not just Hip Hop but RnB, Pop and Rock.
*The Old Guard admired him (80's), The New Guard loved him (90's) and the Youth respects him (00's and beyond).
*Murdered every feature and callabo he was on. It didn't matter who was on the track, weither it was Michael Jackson, Bone Thugs, 112 or Shaq, he went in every time on a callabo.
*Only Rapper to successfully flow over every regional production on an LP (Life After Death had beats from East, West, Midwest and South)
*Worked with a wide range of Legendary Artist in his short career from Michael Jackson, Jay Z, Heavy D, DMC of Run DMC, Tupac Shakur.
*Started the Top Rapper marrying or hooking up with RnB Chick trend. (Jay/Beyonce, NaS/Kelis, Nelly/Ashanti, T.I./Tiny)
*Help to popularize High Fashion in Hip Hop. (Versace said Biggie helped her brand)
*Revolutionaze Hip Hop/RnB features and fusion.
*Loved in the Underground, The Hood and The Burbs.

Biggie is to Hip Hop what Hendrix is to Rock. They aren't considered the best cause of a long catalog, Hendrix only released 3 LP's during his lifetime but he's considered the GOAT gutair player over Clapton and Santana cause of Skillset. Biggie was the closet we may ever get to the perfect emcee. He basically had no weakness in his skillset. Flow was Godly, give him any beat from any region and his flow gelled into it. Lyrics, almost all his verses were quotables. His voice was like an instrument. His chrisma on the mic was unbelieveable. His storytelling was so vivid, he had every right to call himself the Hitchcock of Hip Hop. His shock endings in "Suicial Thoughts, Somebody Got's To Die and Me and My bytch" will have M.Knight Shaymalan taking another listen.

Outside of the fact his catalog was limited, the only real knock was he didn't get very political but I'd agrue he wasn't trying to change the world but tell a story. He was a storyteller and writer like the great authors before him. "Ready To Die" and "Life After Death" Play out like an Epic Movie Trilogy of the Rise and Fall concepts seen in "The Godfather". Within those rhymes he did speak on consious issues and deep subject matter. Overall Biggie was just unique in Rap History and the fact that his catalog is limited out of every Goat Candiate only highlights how powerful his Impact was. So some artist may have a larger Catalog, or may be better than Big in 1 catagory or another. But Big was the most complete emcee of all time.

Answer: No

Why: Influence of marketing dollars

How: Would you consider Big L or Big Pun top 10 candidates off two albums?

Did he display any extraordinary depth in his subject matter? Just ill flows over some popular samples that were already major hits a decade earlier.
