I have a Puerto Rican friend who swears to god that he's black. I didn't use to let him get away with it but considering that white people treat us the same, I ran with it.

You do realize that PR is NATIONALITY and Ethnic group. Not a race.
It is possible for someone to be PR and STILL be black.

He's from the actual island of Puerto Rico so I'm starting to understand this a little more as I talk to him, but almost all of them I've seen this point including his friends that live there have been some sort of pigment of a lighter or darker yellow, which they consider "white" or "black".
There's barely any African-American/African descent in him at all, so

I don't know How your dude identifies himself or how he looks but like with most other Nationalities especially one as mixed as PR's is your gonna have some people that identify White, Black, Mixed, or indigenous(taino/arawak)

Nah my friend and his friends are like, yellow as hell. It might just be a location thing though, like maybe the pigments change based on where you are in PR.
