Good interview, He mentioned Doe Doe

He also mentioned that his album Brick Living went Gold in 3 weeks, I remember it getting 3 1/2 mics in the Source when it came out.

:russ:Rappers love exaggerating. That album for sure sold nowhere near gold. It debuted at #172 on the Billboard 200 album charts and then fell off the charts.

The very next week Nelly's "Country Grammar" topped the charts with 235k albums sold. That means it would have had to be the biggest sales month in history for a album that debuted #172 to sale 500k. If they shipped 500k albums to stores, the vast majorty went unsold.

"Country Grammar" may owe at least some of its success to a lack of new competition. ”This is the worst summer for new releases as far as I can remember,” says Paul Penrose, an urban music specialist at Valley Media in California. ”People are going out now to buy Nelly because they’ve heard good things about it and there’s really nothing else to buy.” Indeed, the only new release in the top 10 this week is De La Soul’s ”Art Official Intelligence,” which sold 81,000 units to land at No. 9.

This the second time he said it sold Gold in 3 weeks :yeshrug:

As I stated before you don't just "ship" 500k. That doesn't make logically sense

Did Wayne just "ship" a million copies in his first week when he had everybody saying he did a million records in one week?

How many did he "ship" that first week?

Make that make sense, nvm, I won't drag the thread.

In the analog, pre-digital days, RIAA certifications (platinum, gold, diamond) were based on units shipped to stores.

Soundscan (and Billboard) numbers were based on units actually sold.

For Brick Livin to do what he said, 171 albums above him would have to have had astronomical sales. That or they shipped a whoooooole lot of albums to stores that didn't get purchased.

I only mention this to keep things in proper perspective because these rappers and execs often exaggerate. I never wanted yungins to get a false perception of what actually happened because that only hurts them in the long run to not lean from the mistakes:yeshrug:.

My guy, that doesn't make any logical sense.

Why would an Exec ship "Gold" for a "new" artist? and why would a "new" boast about going Gold in 3 weeks...

An Ex ships 100k the first week, then 200k the second week, then 200k the 3rd week... Why "ship" that many albums when they are not selling...

I'll let you believe what you wanna believe and I'll believe what I think makes sense.

For one, the official RIAA site doesn't show that Brick Livin was certified anything.
Gold & Platinum - RIAA

And label execs liked to ship large amounts in order to get plaques to up their notoriety. It was a big part of promotion. Same reasons artists may over exaggerate what they did. Also why artists are so caught up in being #1 on the charts regardless of what it actually sales. The entertainment philosophy is that "perception is reality" and built off smoke & mirrors.

The problem came when distributors like Priority starting charging the labels more for returned product.

And yes, what they were doing then and saying now doesn't make logical sense NOR business sense. That's one of the lessons to be learned from No Limit's downfall.
