this thread should be archived later, it shows how terribly people think
microsoft was always going to be in your position because they arent as big as Nintendo or original
and they will never surpass sony as a marketing brand and image because sony is the standard for international gaming, with an extensive history of console gaming and diehard fans. Microsoft is a PC brand that bought into the console market late and even the first Xbox started very slowly. Hardware was never the problem... games arent the problem either, xbox has an identity in "general" gaming. They dont represent a legacy until more recently... they dont have widespread asian influence... in the beginning people clowned all that shyt... but we were proved wrong when all this anime shyt launched and blew up in the past generation and a half. It used to be back of the indian store in its own section next to the original UFC and porn tapes.

None of this is a bad thing for any brand but kinect and Wii were both good ideas, and still innovate and push shyt forward to this day. All consoles had a camera, they all dabbled in motion controls. All stole pieces from Nintendo (Haptic Feedback, Motion Control, etc) Sony kills it in developing product you need, such as Ps2 eliminated the need to go buy a 300$ Dvd player separately, why wouldnt you just buy a ps2. Sega really dropped the ball because they had everything right there going so well with Dreamcast.... they already had the fanbase and mascot... they innovated far beyond and paid for it.

Dap because I like the effort and in some ways you're right. Xbox lost momentum in the second half of that gen and then when PS3 got steam it didn't really stop. So when MS revealed Xbox one they gave Sony which already had momentum from the second half of the generation a free win.
Read my post.

This is backwards as fukk. It is literally opposite the numbers

Xbox 360 sold 40 million in its first 5 years and 45 in the next 3 years. They actually picked up momentum during the kinect years. Those three years after Kinect came out were literally xbox best selling years EVER.

Why do y’all insist on running away from the numbers to make up your own story :mindblown:

Make up own story? This is considered fact.

PS3 won the war despite the horrible start. I say this despite not owning a ps5. I'm a former Sony head and hate modern Sony so I have no horse in this race.

Sony took over in the second half of that gen when MS went with Kinect and stuff and ultimately outsold X360.

You could just Google. I know my games and I know my shyt so your accusation is :mjlol:

PS3 sold more consoles than xbox 360 literally every year on the market. Xbox 360 just had a year headstart.

You don’t know shyt but forum narratives.

Again. By the numbers xbox 360 sold 40 million consoles it’s first 5 years on the market. It sold 42 million over the next 3 years. Those are the numbers.

What changed was the narratives people flung around, games media was just as dumb and sensational then as now.

Xbox got casual with kinect, they didn’t have many exclusives and people on forums started to turn on xbox, but by the numbers xbox was having its very best years.

People don’t want to accept that cause it flies in the face of what you have told yourselves about the console market.

I think the problem was the kinects success lead to Microsoft doubling down and making it the selling feature of the X1.

I already broke it down in this thread with links
Let’s do this one more time. So this whole thing can be put to rest.

Don’t know why sony stans bother yourselves with this topic so much. Literally every day we get a bunch of threads and posts of you weirdos twisting your brains into pretzels trying to figure this out.

The answer is Xbox is, as Xbox always has been.

By the numbers.

ED7-A5-D5-D-4-BC7-4-C6-C-A261-AFB5-ACBF1-E67.jpg

As of May 2010 360 had sold 40 million consoles.

So in 5 years they sold 40 million consoles

Just 3 years later they had sold a whopping 80 million consoles

So you may wonder where in the hell did this explosion in sales come form :ohhh:

Kinect released in November 2010 :jbhmm:

Ironically the thing you credit with “xbox downfall” is the ONLY reason you can point to 360 sales to fall from. The kinect unit itself sold about 35 million units.

In comparison the xbox one. The console y’all claim to be such a failure and a product of microsoft’s bad decisions and their “downfall” Sold the same 40 million in its first 5 years

And ended at about 60 million

Series X numbers are harder to come by but estimates said around 18 mill in two years, which was actually more than 360 first two years

So with no exclusives, putting all their stuff on PC day one. Series X still in line with the sales of its predecessors :ehh:

There’s only one anomaly in this 23 years of xbox sales. And it’s called the Kinect. The ultimate irony is that the kinect it’s what’s throwing y’all’s perception off. The casual thing that supposedly ushered in bad times at xbox is quite literally its most successful moment in console sales. Remove the 35 million kinect’s sold and 360 probably sells LESS than Xbox 1

So as per usual, The actual numbers don’t seem to add up to the forum narratives y’all been repeating for 20 years now, crazy,:takedat:

So please. You guys don’t have to lose sleep over this anymore.

It’s not nintendo, it’s not sony, it’s not “exclusives” or PC releases. It’s not “dudebros” or “casuals” not sonys “used games” video, it’s not “tv tv tv”

The answer is simple. Xbox is, as xbox always has been.

Thank you for attending my ted talk

As of May 2010 360 total sales were 40 mil.

As of Oct 2013 they were up to 80 mil

So they went from selling about 8 mil a year to like 13 mill a year once kinect came out.

Sony sold more than xbox every year it just took a while to catch up because xbox had an 8 million unit head start.

Xbox wasted so many resources on this bullshyt only to later blast it from existence. Went from required to own the console to optional to now the console doesn't even have the port to use the damn thing.

The bottom line is their core audience that got the 360 to such success levels never asked for this thing and didn't want it. Kinect was the death of Lionhead Studios. Apple today is getting more use out of the tech than Microsoft ever did with Face ID.

You are wrong. If 35 million people ain’t their “core” audience. Then they don’t have a core audience.

The kinect stuff with X1 didn’t have much an effect on sales. as the X1 sold MORE than 360 when the kinect was attached.

The Xbox 360 generation showed that Microsoft could have at least been competitive with Sony if the focused on what primary Xbox customers wanted. Sony made critical mistakes with the PS3 that Microsoft should have continued to push on. Instead they got distracted by Nintendo's success like a dog chasing a car and went off in a completely different direction.

Imagine if most of the resources that went into Kinect and Kinect games went into making a wealth of core titles for traditional Xbox 360 gamers. They went from the mid 80 million customers (360) to the early 60 millions (XBONE) . They gave up 25 or so million customers between generations and that came from the momentum they gave up pushing Kinect and chasing after Nintendo instead of focusing on making the best home console on the market.

I'm not even saying Kinect shouldn't have existed but it should have never been a major focus. PSVR exist and it hasn't derailed the PS4 or PS5. These fools really thought people was gonna be jumping around in front of their TVs playing these overly simplistic games forever to the point they bet the farm on it.

They sold 35 million Kinects.

The only customers they “lost” were people who didn’t come back for kinect 2.

Why are you so adverse to acknowledging the actual numbers :ohhh:

I agree with your take but I dont personally think Microsoft will ever fukk with Nintendo or Sony from a marketing standpoint

I was on the xbox or Ps thread in 2019-2020 telling people to chill before Microsoft bought shyt and now they did
if nobody says anything, Microsoft would still be making the mistakes you were talking about and not really caring much

Just like before it will take 10 more years and a new generation to overlook the mistakes and lack of business name that Microsoft has. (To me) I use my Xbox the most out of all 3, but they dont have an amazing story or characteristic that represents the console. Sega still has Sonic going strong, Mario sold a movie based on doing nothing new for the past 30 years for a billion tickets. I dont personally care about exclusives as a make or break deal... but Microsoft does lack identity. People love to ride for a character or structure, Xbox doesnt really have that to build a cult fanbase.

I'm one of the weird few that dont mind or understand the hate for kinect either, it just should have been an option. They sold it as a necessity one generation too soon. Now Playstation has built in voice control and everyone owns a Google Nest or Alexa. Kinect did all that beforehand with the Wii video control with motion gesture. They should just have a slot on the console itself to plug all of this stuff into (camera, microphone, soundbar etc) All of the stuff Kinect provided and is clowned for is the norm today.

Yep Kinect era Xbox360 was a beast in the USA, people need to put more respect on the Don's name instead of looking up to Phil like he's their daddy :scust:

Problem is that motion controls were about to die as a fad and the Wii U and Xbox1 got absolutely spanked by the PS4.

Kinect can be both the thing that drove the most Xbox sales ever as well as their biggest undoing.

It drove the 360 to their best sales ever but it also lead to the following happening.

PS3 vs X360 - 87m vs 84m
PS4 vs Xbox1 - 117m vs 58m
PS5 vs Series - 46m vs 21m

PS4 vs Xbox1 - 117m vs 58m
PS5 vs Series - 46m vs 21m
Two things at play.

PS3 was a terrible generation according to sony’s standards. Especially coming off the PS2. So that alone made the 360 gen look way more competitive than it would have been if sony didn’t stumble.

People make a big deal about xbox going from 80-60 mil sold. But Sony lost almost 70 million console sales that gen. Pretty much xbox entire fanbase was created out of Sonys mistakes that gen. And through X1 and series x, xbox has held on to that same fanbase.

Second, Kinect sold A LOT of 360 consoles. In just a few years Kinect. sold 35 million units. Obviously some of those were existing xbox owners, but most were sold through bundles and to new customers.

And as you said motion controls was a quick fad, So the kinect actually inflated xbox sales beyond what they would have been without it.

X1 for all the talk about how terrible a move it was for xbox actually sold MORE than 360 did before the kinect came out. The thing it didn’t have was a late gen push like the 360 did with kinect.

So by xbox standards the lost console sales were the kinect customers not coming back.

Forum narratives are always based on console wars so in comparing xbox vs playstation sales people ignore their individual performance.

Playstation still has not recovered over 40 million of its customers from the PS2 era.

Xbox is selling about what it’s always sold without the influx of kinect customers.

Most of the talk about any of this is just fanboy fodder.

You see how @winb83 and the rest of the sony stan coalition just smooth ignore the actual numbers, because they can’t reconcile reality with the narratives they spin.

They claim kinect and a casual push is what lost xbox customers, but by the numbers the kinect and casual push are the ONLY reason xbox had some customers to lose. Those are the people that didn’t come back.

Playstation has and always will be the more popular brand. Like coke vs pepsi. Pepsi might have a good year here and there but it will never catch up.
