Probably because the NBA pushes out the older players even when they can still contribute. Well except:

This is not entirely true.
It's hard to compare this season with others where he's played extensively more minutes.
In terms of actual on court play, this is one of his better seasons he's had in recent memory. It remains to be seen if he can keep it up, but the amount of control and playing within the parameters of Denver's offense is something he hasn't displayed for a long time. The two-man game between him and Jokic has been a joy to watch and he hasn't been this comfortable with another star since playing with KD (which is nearly a decade ago).

i thought initially russ starting was a stop gap but you cant argue with the results. it shocked me when i saw it but they're 10-2 with russ starting. last 3 games sure not huge volume but hes only missed 3 shots from the field and 7-7 from the line. starting or not, in his last 11 games played russ has only had a negative +/- once.
out of the nuggets 3 best performing 5 man lineups this season, russ is in all 3. nuggets most common 5 man lineup is murray/braun/porter/gordon/jokic with a +6.4 net. you take out murray for westbrook and that number jumps to +28.5, gordon for westbrook +19.0, braun for westbrook +21.0.

Love the fact that Russ found a perfect fit with the nuggets.
Russ has already been one of my favorite players to watch since his early OKC days. If he could get a chip with Denver it would be the perfect ending imo to his hall of fame career.
