I see a lot of people dappin up Malta in this thread... As a Maori who lives and has always lived in NZ I gotta say most of what he's saying isn't accurate.

First off, it's an honour to do the haka, any version. Most NZ sports teams perform it to show respect to the Maori warriors of past. And as someone mentioned it is always lead by someone of Maori descent. It's not a case of stealing culture, but that culture being embraced and the haka is one of the most important things to 99% of Kiwis, regardless of race.

And before this thread gets sidetracked any further I'll add this as a last point, in NZ we currently have our own political party with seats in parliament reserved only for Maori so we always have a voice, and if anyone can show me another government who has admitted wrong-doings to its indigenous people and paid reparations of almost $1 billion dollars I'd love to see it.

On topic: :to: I wish we were even a little bit more competitive, NZ basketball needs all the help it can get

Breh, your people are the poorest in that country, half of all the children living below the poverty line are Maori or Pacific, that is not much different than what African Americans face. It IS stealing culture when you're still not much better off now than you were 20 years ago. I could only imagine how pissed Native Americans would be if dudes started doing tribal dances before Cleveland Indian games.

We have a black president, it doesn't matter in the end who the figurehead is or how many seats you have in parliament when you are still facing social inequality that is systemic and designed to keep you where you are. Congress apologized for slavery and the US offered an official apology to Native Americans, that shyt means little if your social standing itself doesn't change. Good luck getting more reparations, my family never saw the 40 acres and a mule and the land that was taken from you is worth far more than $1 billion :yeshrug:

:camby: fukk all that, if the Redskins and Indians came out like -

I doubt Native Americans would view it as tribute if Zach McAllister came out in full headress and started doing a dance like the one above :russ:

If we had a team full of actual natives doing that shyt here, and they wanted their teammates, regardless of race that they sweat and compete with day in and day out to perform something that shows unity and national pride, I say they should be allowed to.

Don't compare corporate owned teams that are clearly built on stereotypes and c00ning to a team built on national pride and heritage.

I understand where you're coming from, but I see nothing wrong with the dance. It's a tradition. If the Maoris on the team objected to them doing it, they'd say so. Just more bullshyt outrage for no reason.

You'll just have to excuse the ignorance of people like Malta. Here in America, being perpetually upset about dumb shyt like this is a national past time. Most normal people would watch that dance and consider it to be a sign of appreciation and respect towards New Zealand's indigenous groups. Others are just looking to inject race into something in order to be breed racial resentment.

What does any of that have to do with the basketball team doing a traditional Maori dance?

Do you have an official list of what each racial group should and should not be allowed to do according to the all knowing Malta? What are the things that white people created that black people or Asian people shouldn't be allowed to do?

:dead: the clips of rose, harden, and faried need to be gifs immediately

it's cool that new zealand pays homage to the indigenous culture tho, imagine team usa doing some onondaga ritual before the games

paying respect to the lands natives at least they acknowledge them unlike over here we try to make everyone think there is no history pre 1770

It doesn't really matter that white people do it too, it is still a cultural statement. None of the other American countries do anything similar to represent their native cultures on an international level, and all of them have culturally marginalized their native people.

It has no immediate effect on social structures, but it still might have a positive effect on changing stereotypes. If anything, it attributes cultural heritage as something positive.

For hundreds of years native culture has been portrayed as backward and not worthy of imitation in great parts of the world, here lies the real problem

What? y'all are lying like shyt

According to Redskins fans the naming of the team is prideful and it upholds traditions :skip:
