It doesn't really matter that white people do it too, it is still a cultural statement. None of the other American countries do anything similar to represent their native cultures on an international level, and all of them have culturally marginalized their native people.

It has no immediate effect on social structures, but it still might have a positive effect on changing stereotypes. If anything, it attributes cultural heritage as something positive.

For hundreds of years native culture has been portrayed as backward and not worthy of imitation in great parts of the world, here lies the real problem

brehs look like they could be from anywhere. a quick search shows me one surname that could be maori, so a lotta them are equally maori as much as anything else. one dude has a parent from fiji and mom from NZ.

i dunno, i dont care what ethnic group they come from. new zealand is multi-ethnic and they're giving a nod to the original peoples of the land. it's not nearly enough as to what they deserve, and i'd hope it's not presented that way, but it's good to see at least an attempt to integrate oppressed peoples into society at large.

everyone does it out there for the most part. this half Jamaican half german chick I know that was born in new zealand said its basically ingrained in there culture
