Here are the reasons to like the Mets in 2014 and beyond: Harvey, Wheeler, Niese, maybe dikkey, Tejada, more payroll flexibility. - - Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN)
I guarantee you can do this with every team in baseball, and we'd be middle of the pack. That's a "nice" core, even with Wright. Wheeler and Harvey would have to be ace level for it to be anything more than "nice."
Doesnt help that the best team in the league just do happens to be in our division. The Braves aren't gonna fade too much, the Reds are here for good, Pirates are on the comeup, Cardinals are always there, Dodgers are the new Yankees, Giants are young and talented, DBacks have pitching on the way, etc. The other teams aren't getting worse where i can look at guys like Niese, dikkey, Ike, Murph and Tejada, a few prospects and hopefully David Wright (who i like a lot) and think "we're nasty!"
The FA markets blow dikk in the positions we need help in. You wanna overpay Michael Bourn in his 30s? Victorino? BJ Upton? there are maybe 2 or 3 good options after 2013, and it's not like we can afford to trade our "prospects" for an outfield.
oh yeah... and we have an awful, awful bullpen that still needs to be addressed.
I have no faith in our front office to make a big splash, either. Don't get me wrong, they're smart guys, but im gonna hate when Josh Hamilton (just a random player) is rumored for a week, but Sandy signs someone like Cody Ross and then we hear how Ross is 75% the player Hamilton is at a fraction of the cost b/c some stat Depo pulled out his a$$hole says so. And when Ross has a .755 ops in June, and Hamilton has a .980, someone will always argue, "mehh, he's only 3 points higher in WAR b/c is defense and blibbity, blibbity blah blah blah blah."
im all for statistical analysis, but fukk bargain hunting. We need a big time player on this team, and im not talking about Ike Davis.
