Nelly says his Era of rap was the toughest : “When I put out songs, I Had To go Against DMX, JAY-Z, Eminem, Lil Wayne, 50 Cent, Luda."

Of course they liked it more. Saying "eyah eyah oooo ooooooooooh" sing songy music is an easier catch for folks listening at that time.

I find that Gen Z likes 90s hip hop more. Tupac...the success of the Wu Tang series, Laryn Hill being loved by Gen Z, the love for vinyl by Gen Z....that isn't 00 music bruh.
Look at the wealth of youtube reaction videos Gen Z post on 90s hip hop. will 'sing songy" in the club 00' music spur reaction videos that show case the MC's of that era's depth?

00' music has more of a "you have to had been there" past quality to it. 90s music in general has that "oh....I get what they are SAYING" quality to it. That will always have a greater shelf life.
I own 2 gyms with alot of college and high school students training in there. They respond more to 2000s than the 90s and its not close. It suprised me because i was trying hard to get them to understand 90s hip hop. That mf millennium tour even showed me how much they rock with it. I used to think they wouldnt like it because like u said it was an era you had to be in and you had to be specifically in the south to get it but a group of them explained to me they love 2000s music because it simple and fun. It makes sense beacause these kids wants to vibe to something fun and dance. They could careless about lyrics and skills. Plus most of the rap music made today is depressing. I played some shyt off illmatic one day and it broke my heart the responses i was getting.

Old nikkas defending their era, I get it. But what Nelly is saying is right. fukk the purist shyt, if you were considered a top hip hop & r&b artist in his era, the competition was much stiffer than any other era because that was the peak of hip hop’s commercial run. No other era was selling more than they were.

you're short changing him, Sweat/Suit still did numbers (not CG/Nellyville numbers, but still successful). so he had about a 4 year run
His style changed too drastically to fast. Hes more similar to Ja than fetty. They came out with that street music(country grammar is a great album) and then just kept softening their sound. That’s why the Chingy beef popped a lil bit. Ppl were frustrated or exhausted with Nelly and ready for somebody new to take his space. Same thing that happened to Ja.

Neely came out when j entered high school . Freshman year everybody was bumping country grammar album. By my junior year nobody was checking for his music anymore.

:mindblown: y’all 00’s nikkaz gotta fall back

:mjlol: BadBoy & DeathRow has 6 alone

Mase
Puff
Dre
Pac
Biggie

^^^ who else from Bad Boy/Death Row. Only three (Pac, Dre, Biggie) of them had more than one album to go 3X Platinum or better. Everyone I listed had multiple albums accomplish that.

I don't know why this is even a argument. 1998-2001 was peak sales for music. 2003-2005 saw another spike especially for Black music and it hasn't been the same since.

I lived through the '90's and its '90's>>>>> every era since. Still, that doesn't cloud my judgement.

Can't hate he's right. And he came in hot, it didn't last long but he did his thing. He had some massive songs that immediately crossed over. Man went diamond first time out none of those other rappers even came close. I remember when Jay said that line about him, pimp juice, and Em, but Jay wasn't moving units like that. Sales wise he was competing against Luda and Ja

In that line he said "us" I understood it as the entire Rocafella. Meaning em and Nelly, as a solo acts, were selling as much as his entire label lol

Cool, but even still up and to that point, every other artist on "the Roc" never went platinum. It was not until Cam and then Kanye came around that any other artist on the label actually went platinum. And they certainly didn't sell like Nelly or Eminem at that time. Beans and Bleek were consistently Gold artists. Nelly and Em and were outselling the entire roster, including Jay-Z on one album. Vol. 2 was the biggest selling album ever on the original Roc incarnation.

NO, read Stik Up Kids post above.... Plus the music was a lot better in the 90s as well, known as the Golden Era for a reason.

True indeed. Wu actually sold 4 but Gza said double disc touched 5 on a song so they might have went another mill on that double album but your post is 100% correct. The music was A LOT better as well like I said a few times, that other stuff was fluffed down white girl garbage if we are being honest, club songs they danced to but hip hop peaked in the 90s and it's known as the GOLDEN ERA for a reason.

biggie , mase , puff , dre , snoop , pac = all had a 3x platinum album = and from 2 record labels

i don’t think there was 8 rappers from 00’s that had a 3x platinum album - i already asked several poster to list them & i see none of them did

90’s sold more … it is , what , it is
