Nelly says his Era of rap was the toughest : “When I put out songs, I Had To go Against DMX, JAY-Z, Eminem, Lil Wayne, 50 Cent, Luda."

Grillz was the #1 song in the country in ‘06, and “The culture ” was definitely fukking with it

Far as what Nelly said, there was definitely a lot of competition at the top of the charts…but it was also the commercial peak of hip hop…it’s like winning the scoring title when total scoring was at it’s highest…it was “easier” to put up huge numbers in nellys era IMO

Off topic but I think that this song put Gipp back on the map.

He could have definitely rebranded as a new artist during that era.
That Grillz song was one of favorites as a kid.

Did u ever hear that Ali and Gipp album??

The 3 years that Nelly made noise were actually Hip Hop's weakest years in the history of the genre.

Labels were signing basically anyone they felt could turn a cheesy hook into gold. This was also when the 360 deal started popping up, and dudes were vanishing after one big record.

Nelly was a pop act. Not Hip Hop. So he was never in talks about being dope as an MC. His whole model that Universal set up for him, was about making Top 40 pop hits. So he can't speak like he's ever been in the same league as any of the MC's from that era. He was never viewed the same. Which is why by '03, he was a wrap. Dude was only on for three years. Fell off quick fast.

Nelly was selling more off the singles in the later years… He knew that hippity hop shyt wasn’t for him so he decided to make his videos fun and cartoonish like Luda but he concealed some of his crimes under goofy slang like E-40

He may not have been the best rapper but dude capitalized down the line. He lowkey gave Flo-Rida and Pitbull their blueprint.

I can see why Nelly uses Ecstasy. He was making Party Music that will always be in demand.

Flo-Rida stole his whole sh*t.

There was another dude that dropped back then that was a Nelly clone, whose name I can never remember. But he had a video where he was racing a car on foot or some weird sh*t like that. LOL!!

Flo-Rida stole nothing from Nelly. Flo-Rida was gifted "Low", which Nelly rejected, which was the beginning of his run. They sound nothing alike. Nelly's sound is far more country than Flo-Rida and Nelly isn't even from The South.

That's it right there! HAHA!!

I haven't seen that video in mad years. I remember him and Nelly had some issues because Nelly said he was biting his style. But dude said he had never heard of Nelly before he was making music.

kinda making his point... Country grammar came out in '00, he came in STRONG (II)

But with so much competition, he eventually faded away after his lil run. I wholeheartedly believe if the early 00s wasn't so stacked his run would've been longer.

this random AF but what ever happened to Fetty Wap?? Dude came in and had the charts on SMASH for like a year. That year where half his album was on the radio was crazy. He literally fell off right after that one year run though. And this was well before he got caught up in that shyt so we can't blame his fall off on that. shyt crazy
He was gonna fade away regardless though.

Either way he was not competing with all these guys at their peaks commercially.

Like Jay Z and DMX peaked commercially before he dropped his first album.
