nba been trash but if games are now behind a paywall I dont think free cable "viewership" numbers matter as much as bottom line of profit

honestly they have a good model but bad marketing... right now Im seeing Carlos Boozer and Udonis on NBATV hosting. I dont even want to see them on TV when they were active in the league. They market too much focus on the whole aspect of the league and not let these dudes battle for position to get credibility and airtime.... while other players simply want the money and no airtime. The players dont seem hype so the league isnt going to be... storyline and rivalry is an afterthought... has nothing to do with regular season or not. Marketing and how you can actually view games leaves alot to be desired

This would be a reasonable point if it didn't also apply to the NFL, and they're not having these issues

There's a clear reluctance to acknowledge that the game itself is not enjoyable to watch anymore for a variety of reasons
nfl plays way less games and once a week

to make matters worse, they are on Amazon... everyone has an Amazon Prime account

a person is simply not going to pay 100s for league pass, or pay monthly when you are in a month of the sport that doesnt matter. It would be like me paying to watch Jake Paul and Tyson train for 8 months for 13.99, I dont want to see that, I want to see and pay for the actual game. To your point, I havent watched football since 2004.... I have football on Amazon for free and dont use it. I watch basketball since 1992... but I'm not paying to watch highlights during the beginning of the season. I can just watch in March and pay for 2 months instead of buying an entire season.

I’m currently up watching this OKC vs Sacramento game (I am BORED) and I see the crowd and it’s like 50% EMPTY :banderas:

Fans have really checked out this season

Unless it’s Knicks fans in MSG or Warriors fans in the Bay

Easiest answer is injuries, which have been a big problem. From a broader view, I’d say “no juice.” The biggest stars remain the same ones from 10 years ago, who are now late 30s (going on 40s) and on mediocre teams. The best team has all the charisma of the mid-2000s Spurs, just with the name “Celtics” across the front instead. The game certainly feels stagnant, and while complaints about the 3-point shot are veering into cliche (it’s basically the same now as the complaints about traveling were 20 years ago), there is something uninteresting about games where teams just jack up threes.

nikkas are stupid just like we've been saying on this website for decades
most older posters called the change over ... its not injuries or overall scope of talent in the league, but that's what we complained about

the one dude in here is dumb for asking how they got deals for billions etc ... when the market of the entire globe is international now
of course when fukking Sri Lanka and New Zealand can subscribe and jump on an app to watch its gonna extend viewership and numbers... that has nothing to do with the overall quality of the game itself as a North American sport. You end up with 100s of millions of casual fans with casual commitments to casual style gameplay. They literally pander to international outreach for decades right in front of you... they create a cup game that mimmicks soccer etc... its all amazing in concept but their end goal is to sell out your structure and market it mostly on a global scale that doesnt involve you anymore. If "NBA China" in 20 years makes more money for them with higher viewership, you will be watching asian players on most headlines and on TV in the future :yeshrug: its no different than baseball except Nba is selling out in all directions at a more desperate rate

NBA is basically a 22 year old, big booty stripper who is giving everyone a shot. She sets boundaries, but each dude who comes to visit gets away with extra shyt. Eventually she either gets pimped hard by one dude... or she ends up washed and runs back to the thing that made her pop to begin with. In sports case, she will continue to be in the streets because everyone likes to play her. You lost that girl awhile back. Now you just gotta bring your 1s and appreciate what's left of her but keep your visits to a minimum

The increase in TV money is driven more by the rise of streaming than international viewership expansion. With streaming, there’s less overall live TV viewership and fewer options for advertisers. The NBA and NFL have absorbed a lot of the live TV money that was going to TV shows before streaming.

I've explained this in TSC before but what can you expect from neckbeards.... Thing is.. none of these corporations know what's next. They know streaming is where it's at but the advertising money hasn't caught up so they are stuck piling money into these streamers with no clear answers on what the revenue is going to look like 5 years from now.
