i just think some fans that don’t evolve with nas wouldn’t like songs like the sound of no phony love or no brunch on Sunday’s. Even his flow on rare. What makes nas to me that dude is cuz he can make songs for everyone and even the songs that normally wouldn’t be my cup of tea he finds a way to put his crazy ass style and make it “nas” and makes me love the songs after a couple more listens. Son really can do it all. Some critics just stay stuck on one thing. He wouldn’t have been this successful had he stuck to one niche. That’s why I bug out when I see ya post some of ya favorite songs compared to some of mine or others. But at the same time, this is why I also know he’s targeting all of us in his own way.

EXACTLY.

I LOVE songs like No Phony Love and Brunch On Sundays. These are what makes Nas a transcendent artist. ONLY Nas can do a song like Who Killed It. Or two part stories like Undying Love/Amongst Kings or Sekou Story/Live Now. ONLY Nas can tell a whole story from beginning to end in ONE verse like Still Dreamin. Nas is the fukking GOAT

agree completely. Like peep game. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy those songs cuz of how he did it but it’s not my go to songs. The mood gotta be set for that type of sound for me to enjoy it to the fullest. Yet, I enjoy the hell out of yktv. At first I was just “Cool” with rare. After magic, the shyt played for me during a drive, and it made me appreciate how fire that song really is. I stay listening to it now. Two of my favorite songs on kd1 and 2 is blue benz and death row east. Two of my least favorite songs on magic is wu for the children and ugly. Get the different styles of music we all enjoy from son? I admire knowing how much people love the two songs that are my least favorite or think some of my favorite ones are ones they wish he would have took out the album. That lets me know he know what he definitely know what he doing and keeping integrity in his pen, sound, and age.

To me lot of it goes down to Nas being seen as this hero for backpacker types when Nas was just a street breh who was poetic and introspective but also liked the flashy stuff. He was never like them but they thought he should be.

And Nas was right to feel a way about the Roots for Unplugged. If they’re just playing the songs then fine but them playing the Oochie Wally instrumental made them a target

Nas is a jazz fan and the son of a jazz musician so he's prob seen this ideological battle play out up close for years, going back to his childhood. Fans who wanted Miles Davis to play ballads for his entire career. Execs who wanted Kind Of Blue, part 2 and 3 and 4 etc . There are people to this day who think Miles committed blasphemy by daring to touch electric instruments, or to implement rock guitars into his bands, synths, etc. Not to mention when Miles fully embraced hip hop on his last album, working with Easy Mo Be.

I think there's a difference between riding trends and looking for the next sound that inspires you. If you get it right, your shyt sounds timeless. It Was Written sounds fresh today, production wise, to the point even detractors have to admit they were wrong. If you praise Rick Ross or Drake for their production today as an old head, I need to hear your opinion on It Was Written because these are the people who hated in 96. Elliot Wilson being a MAJOR example. Even now with the Hit Boy stuff...you're gonna tell me you like Kings Disease/Magic but thought Street Dreams was corny in 1996? Brehs gotta admit Nas was ahead of the wave and give him credit for it.

But it goes back to what @Ziggiy said years ago. Some people just wanted Nas to be OC. No disrespect to OC who is a legend, but these people never saw Nas as a superstar. They wanted him to remain Large Pro's little mans who they helped create a classic. The great rapper from Queens who you call up for shows when you need a rapper, at your House Of Blues show with 700 people capacity.

I can’t think of anything on KD2 that was egregiously “not right” for Nas. KD2 is my personal favorite of the Hit-Boy era so far and I feel its almost flawless. Nas SNAPPED on that album lyrically and Hit-boy laced him with some awesome production. Even the modern “trap” sounding songs like YKTV and 40 Side sounded natural and unforced.

I think nas is better lyrically on magic tho. Like the punchlines are more in abundance. You can sense more his hunger on this. But overall kd2 is my favorite project too since it's well rounded

I like the grown man nas. It started on God's son and really blossom on streets disciple on songs like no one else in the room. So I don't mind theses tracks, it's like I can light a cigar and let it play.
I think that's what separate nas from az. That capacity to vary his subject matter, production and flow

Nas is the GOAT storyteller, but Andre and Big killed it with the telling a story in one verse on "Da Art of Storytellin" Pt. 1, 2, and 4.

see I still am into more of the gutter side but even with no one else in the room, he finds a way to give it that gutter feel:
“beauty and the goon they will say, You calm and savage beast,
You’s a sexy freak.
Your moist lips negates the ecstasy,
Number 1 in my book no discrepancy”. :banderas:

who can put those type of words in that kind of track?? That’s what keeps me in tune with songs I don’t normally go for.

This agree with. Because brunch on sundays, 40 side, yktv, spicy are all dope records. But alot of Nas fans dont like when he goes that direct, but nas kills it everyone. 40 side in particular has a dope message if you pay attention.

Nas murders YKTV. "My photo the Jordan logo for this rap shyt"

Main thing is there's a large segment that don't think Nas should ever do "fun" songs. Gotta be super serious all the time

It’s just bugged out how he has a wide variety of fans that like all his shyt but are more to attached to a certain type of style. I don’t mind records like spicy or yktv. I loved you know my style on streets disciple. Felt it should have had a video. But let’s say 40 side. Although I enjoy it cuz he brought it justice, I was surprised at the tone of it. I prefer for a 40 side type of song to match every ghetto type of vibes. But again, son know what he doing. It ain’t just for my ears only since lots of people love 40 side and I enjoy it so it’s a win regardless.
