Feels like Nas is more frustrated/emotional/restless here than the last few. That line about I Am... leaking sounded like he was badly hurt. Also, if you squint you can see him admit the criticism of his art does hurt on "Bokeem Woodbine".

The diversity in style here kind of suggests that he wants more challenging things to try. It's weird, because while some of this makes it less of a quality album than it's predecessors, it also makes this work more interesting.
Nas addressed a lot on this album if people actually sit down and listen to the lyrics. He is talking to media, fans, haters, etc… he is addressing a lot. He is fed up low key, but still keeping it cool. He knows he gets downplayed often and it’s done purposely.

You know I don’t get the impression, that Nas himself is particularly fed up with his current station in the rap game. Not like he was on say, Stillmatic or even heavily annoyed like say Hip Hop Is Dead. I think he’s just explaining and cleaning up certain narratives that have kind of been allowed to run unchecked all of these years. The I Am bars directly address one of his most controversial periods where he was called everything from a sell out to uninspired, lazy, etc. He’s letting us know that he DID put a lot of hard work into the double album concept and that its dismantling bothered him.

Its the same thing, on a smaller scale, that he did with Death Row East. Same thing with Wu For The Children. All of these songs address questions or criticisms that have followed him throughout his career. I take this round of projects, amongst other things, as a way of setting the record straight.

I think Nas was the most irritated on the first Magic, if I look at all five albums in this run. Maybe not irritated, but it felt like he was tired of being humble and just let everybody know he's the best and always has been. The first thing he says is that he doesn't know what's going on anymore. Then lines like "Your top three, I'm not number one, how could you post that?" or "I'm on offense every day until I see the love" or "If they don't say I'm the GOAT, that's just silly behavior." That's the cockiest and coldest Nas has been in a long time, finally saying what a lot of people believe. It's almost like after KD2, him and Hit-Boy were unsatisfied with what they were seeing and hearing and channeled all that frustration into Magic. They probably didn't intend to release any of it, then said "fukk it" and decided that they should just put it out as is.

Magic 2 feels a lot less frustrated and more celebratory. Just an album where the two are toasting to their success.

Based on the most recent listen

Favorite overall song, Pistols

Best verses, Slow It Down

Best vibe, Black Magic and Bokeem

Best energy, Motion

Every track bring something unique whether the vibe or the content. More upbeat, more humor, less serious than the previous albums they got together. Office Hours and EMJ my least favorite but they're listenable

Finally getting my 1st listen right now

Motion :ehh:

Edit: 2nd listen Slow Down is the best song

Vintage Nas

This is definitely his most boring album of all time

Raps aren’t bad and beats aren’t bad but I’ll rank to Nastradamus before this

I don’t know if it’s irritated but I saw it as aggressive. I know exactly what you mean. I heard the same thing. Magic 1 is where Nas got his swag really going. He was comfortable and just letting it all hang out. That was a great set up for KD3.

On what this all really means nas said “ i done hooked up with a beast/ never stingy with the beats/ experimental accident records wound up killin the streets”

That whole verse basically explains why nas and Hit got chemistry. Maybe primo pete timbo all of the heat established producers might not be willing to give nas a throw away beat cause they expecting residuals and commercial hits when he is doing it for the love instead of billboard success.

Nas challenged Hitboy and he delivering for him so i will bump and appreciate every track we got enough music for 2 double discs LPs

:blessed:

I swear just for the sake of Stanning y'all cats will say anything on this site, do you realize "Stillmatic" has at least 7 all time classic Nas songs on it and you actually said KD2, 3 and Magic can definitely compete with "Stillmatic." Smfh

Stillmatic Intro
Ether
You're Da Man
Rewind
One Mic
2nd Childhood
Destroy & Rebuild

Dude you're in a thread where Motion has been called the best n worst song on the album. So what does that tell you.....

Some of you like using Stan to discredit n devalue opinions . Only sports n politics has definite scores.

Somebody can feel just as strongly as you in the opposite direction. It doesn't mean that their vision is clouded by Nas penis.

All that streaming party shyt and this prolly his worst selling project. nikkas just need to let people do what they do.
Someone mentioned that streaming means more to sales than an actual sale, and I don't understand it at all. I bought the album digitally, I gave him an album sale. I have tried to leave it streaming on Spotify when I'm not busy, but I would have to stream 1500 track plays before I register a sale. I don't understand why you wouldn't encourage people to actually buy the album instead of wasting time racking up a bunch of streams that hardly amount to anything.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but unless you are reaching critical mass commercially you aren't going to get much out of streaming numbers.

Breh it literally took me YEARS to even half way figure the shyt out. Its the most asinine system ever.

Back during when KD2 was released Nas was number 1 on both iTunes AND Apple Music for pretty much the whole week but came in at number 3 on Billboard. Thats when I was kinda over the whole charade.

Yes, Pure sales count “lower” than Streams, and not all streams are created equal. If you have the free version it counts less than the premium paid versions. YouTube views count less as well. And on websites Physical sales don’t count UNTIL they actually ship and with the demand for CD/Vinyl outpacing the pressing factory availability, an independent artist like Nas isn’t going to trump millions upon millions of demand for say a Taylor Swift or Harry Styles physicals.

The game is all fukked up out here. But again, if you purchased the album with your hard earned money, then you DID support and nobody can take that away. I always buy via iTunes and then buy physicals on the website. I’ve also purchased multiple digital copies from the Nas website.

This go round I tuned into the streaming party because I had time, this was a good month for Nas to release music for ME personally because I haven’t been too busy. And like I said earlier the plug provides valuable info. I’m going to try to tune in on Thursday night too because David Kim (Engineer for all of the Magic and KD albums) will be on answering questions. So that will be informative.

But again not EVERY fan has the luxury of time.
