I like about half the album. It's not trash, but it's not great. Nas is still at his post KDII rhyme level, but the inspiration seems lacking and the style of production doesn't match his energy because of it. Like others said, he fukked up naming the album Magic 2. It's cool that "Magic" is a running theme for him to build around, but he had to have understood that after the vintage sound of the first Magic people were going to go in with certain expectations. Blame whoever you want for the disappointment, but it was the obvious thing that was going to happen with the name Magic 2, regardless of their intentions.

This is easily one of the worst produced albums in Nas' discography. Black Magic might be one of the worst beats he's ever been on. What are those drums?? I fukk with Memphis shyt, but Project Pat would never be caught dead rapping over that fukking reversed snare. Office Hours was okay, and Motion was dope, but it took until Slow It Down to get my head nodding. Even that joint has the snare sitting way on the right in the mix for no reason at all though. Pistols On Your Album Cover is my favorite track after 2 listens, but Nas is missing the aggressionon it that he had on the last two albums. He seems like he's back on the laid back, feeling it out, not trying to impress anyone tip, like back on KD1 and some of KD2. There's just a lot of regression here that I didn't expect after the growth of the last 3 albums.

Hitboy really showed his limitations here, and frankly he let Nas down bad. This is really just proof that the entire HB vs AL discussion before the drop was completely warranted. The same people who were offended at the notion that people would want to hear Nas work with other producers are going to be the same ones going crazy over the album and trying to shyt on people who have a different opinion than them about it. You KNOW who you ARE and the way you POST is EXHAUSTING to READ so you can just keep your opinion to yourself. I'm not arguing with goofies about my personal opinion tonight.

I'm a Nas stan, but I don't think he's infallible. This album is a huge step back from the last 3, and I hope they take some time to reassess and figure things out before they put another one out. Even more, I hope that Nas is listening to what Alchemist has been working on for the last decade and really takes the time to consider combining their talents again.

My 2 cents :yeshrug:

Agree for the most part, Nas is by far the highlight on this joint, Hitboy is just kinda uninspiring.

I think I agree with 100% of the words on this post. Feel exactly the same. I think they got gassed up by the praises after Magic/KD3 and just dropped a half ass effort. Even Nas' brag is not "different" on here as opposed to usually when we all notice Nas brags different, over here it dull as fukk.

Agreed Slow it down is really the first moment where I "felt" something. It just hits you as soon as he kicks in. Nas is also excellent on Pistols but WTF is that melody for real? I can picture a kid playing it on a Playskool plastic piano...

And we can have this conversation in a week or 2 after the momentum bias is gone : out of 65 tracks released together so far, how many of Magic 2 tracks make your Nas/Hit top 30? Top 40?

just got to this..50 verse not bad
I loved it, actually. But I loved Animal Ambition and pretty much all the tapes leading up to it :yeshrug:

I can see people who tuned out of 50 at some point not fukking with this, but he sounds in line with how he's been rapping for years now. And his lyrics were (modernday-)50ish.

Possibly my favorite track on there.

Yeah Nas just flatout raps and flows better, but they brought different energies so they complimented each other.

Yeah, with the first Magic you could tell he really had a chip on his shoulder about the top 3 thing, and he sounded like he had something to prove. He's bragging, but flow wise the "umph" is gone and even though the lyrics are still there he just sounds like he's going through the motions.

The problem with Pistols has been the problem with Hitboy as a whole. He's looping up sample pack loops and stock sounds and calling it a day. It's been a constant complaint since the first KD. Actually even before that, even since this joint people were shytting on him.

That's a loop from a sample pack called "DIRTY SOUTH BANGAZ." That's not a joke. He downloaded a sample pack with that name, picked a loop and just added drums to it. Like a 12 year old who just figured out how to pirate FL Studio.
The quality of his production can depend on his choice of pre-made loops and he doesn't always have the ability to tweak them in a way that's interesting sonically. The difference between a song like Get Light and Pistols is just the loop he picked from whatever sample pack he was spoon fed. The Get Light sample pack is called "1993 Sample Pack" and was just used by Goldlink in 2019 for a pretty big song.

It's not something you expect from a professional producer with a name. It's like finding out Picasso was just using a paint by numbers template.

Right now I have this album over KD1, but that's about it. Personally I thought KD1 was mostly bland and boring, so that's not really saying much.

Off first listen I'm only put off by the title and 50 verse. Wish it was longer. I expected an advanced version of magic 1. But taking it in as a whole. Its a few joints I think are ok. Like Abracadabra and MEJ The rest is fire to me. I'm being honest.
