Nah its not a shot. It’s common that when people die people start calling you great. It’s the whole point of the idea of giving people their flowers while they are still here cause too often we wait till people pass to five em that recognition. In recent years Nipsey, Pop Smoke and Quavo got so many people recognizing their greatness after their death.

Nas is just saying his greatness has always been known

Meanwhile Jay straight up said “if I ain’t better than Big, I’m the closest one”. That’s why people got at Jay, cause he was straight up alluding to be better than Biggie.

The other line “didn’t take a couple albums, people said it from day one” could easily be a jab at Jay and everyone else

The line “my first album had no famous guests appearances” is a shot to Jay, cause he said it as the opening line of his first single right in the middle of their beef.
Yes we know. So the same way we use context to come to the conclusion it’s a shot there …we can apply that same logic to this verse. If the 2nd part is alluding to jay, it’s only logical to think the first part is referencing to the other main guys mentioned as Goat who just so happened to die: Biggie and Pac.

Big, Pac, jay. He’s separating himself from them in the goat convo and explaining why, all in one bar. Again, it’d be a disservice to Nas to think he’s just rambling or talking in general or talking about ….Pop smoke :aicmon: ….that doesn’t match the context of the full line. He’s talking goat talk.

Listening to this album and KD1 back to back makes KD1 sound weak as hell. Dont think thats a slight to KD1…this is just masterful.

KD1 was basic as hell compared to this.
I said it when it dropped and I just seen someone else say it here, KD1 was intended more for mass consumption...it's his most worldly, "commercial", digestible sounding album ever and I was begging for that from him for forever. It's not coincidental that his one and only Grammy came from that jawn. I'm sure it probably sold the most too out of the last 4...even without the Grammy it would have.

The albums that have succeeded it are more intended for the crowd who complained about KD1 being too commercial sounding and not "lyrical" enough...while still keeping the musical quality high...which is why Hitboy deserves all the flowers he's been receiving for this Nas run. Lyrically, KD1 sounds "basic" compared to KD3, definitely. Song wise though, the quality on both is high level shyt, imo...just KD1 isn't as dense.

Oh for real? In total? Wow. KD2 is like a mix of KD1 and KD3 to me, it sounds "big" but it was definitely a higher level lyrically than KD1.

Imagine if he dropped "Nobody" with Lauren as a single, smh, that album probably would/could have sold more than all 4 combined.

A Villa Straylight.
At this point I prefer them in release order. That's not to say KD III is bad because it's exceptional but personally I prefer KD over all of them. To me KD still sounds like it cares to be a successful somewhat commercial accessible album. KD II and KD III don't sound like that. They're strictly for the fans.
Yeah KD 1 is still my favorite of the series followed by KD 3.

I don't agree but salute, I can dig it. KD1 is starting to get slighted it seems, I've seen it completely off of a lot of these "Top 10" Nas album lists recently. It's definitely in his Top 10, imo.

KD1 is the album that washed away the “stink” of Nasir (personally I like Nasir but i’m a Stan so I have to acknowledge that the general public didn’t) gave Nas a fresh new sound to build off of for years to come, introduced him to a new generation of rap fans through the collabs with Fivio, Big Sean, Durk, and Ferg, and won Nas his first Grammy.

Plus its got what I believe to be a top 20 Nas song with The Cure.

KD1 is dope as fukk. I still think Parts 2 and 3 (and Magic) are better but thats only because Nas and Hit-Boy found a groove and perfected they’re sound together with each subsequent release.

Put it this way, just because Thriller and Bad were wildly successful, all time classics doesn’t take away from the success and impact of Off The Wall. All three albums are celebrated within Michael’s discography and Quincy is given credit for helping MJ evolve and improve with each album.

Off The Wall they experimented with the (at the time) popular Disco sound. Its got the lush and vibrant love songs (Girlfriend, Its The Falling In Love) the odes to romance lost (She’s Out Of My Life) and the catchy single (Don’t Start Til You Get Enough)

KD1 they experimented with more trap sounding beats. Its got the lush and vibrant love songs (Replace Me, Til The War Is Won) the odes to romance lost (All Bad) and the catchy single (Ultra Black)

Thriller they fused R&B, Pop, and Rock into a sound all its own. Its got the superstar features (Paul McCartney and a overall bigger more ambitious scope with the music videos to match (Beat It, Billie Jean)

KD2 they fused Boom Bap, Drill, West Coast G-Funk, and even a little Southern Trap into a sound all its own. Its got Superstar features (Lauryn Hill, Eminem) and an overall bigger more ambitious scope with music videos to match (Rare, Brunch On Sundays)

Bad they went grander and more epic with the sounds and focused more on Michael’s song writing ( He wrote 10 of the 11 tracks) the album was Michael at his most confident:

“Your lyin' eyes gon' tell you right, ah
So listen up, don't make a fight, ah
Your talk is cheap, you're not a man, ah
You're throwin' stones to hide your hands
Well, they say the sky's the limit
And to me that's really true, ah
But, my friend, you have seen nothin'
Just wait 'til I get through”

Michael at his most vulnerable:

“I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could've been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make a change”

Michael at his most confessionary:

“There was a time I used to say, "Girl, I need you"
But who is sorry now?
You really hurt, you used to take and deceive me
Now who is sorry now?
You got a way of making me feel so sorry
I found out right away
Don't you come walkin' beggin' I ain't lovin' you
Don't you get in my way”

KD3 they went grander and more epic with the songs and focused more on Nas song writing (there are no features across 17 tracks) the album is Nas at his most confident:

“I didn′t have to die so that they could call me the great one
Didn′t take a couple albums, people said it from day one”

Nas at his most vulnerable:

“Bold, beautiful, dangerous
And I blocked out the hate that was aimed at us
Community love, providing jobs
Why would you try to come for me, why you ain't proud of Nas?”

Nas at his most confessionary:

“Time is precious
One day I might need my diaper changed inside a convalescent The soul is different than the flesh is
Life is teachin' me more, wisdom and ignorance is kin
To have peace, you need war
By the time you see the stars in the skies they already burnt out Same way these dudes be shinin' but been burnt out
But we don't change, as we get stuck in our ways
We just act like we agree so we can end the exchange
What's meant for you is sent to you
But you could be the problem, it's not always them my dude”

This is a beautiful one to one comparison. I want to see if I can add to it:

-Bad was the most anticipated album of all-time, because Thriller was such a huge success. It was also the album fans had to wait the longest for. KD3 was the most anticipated album of the four and also had the longest wait since Nas announced it almost a year in advance.

-Months after Thriller, we got the legendary Motown 25 performance. Michael performed with the Jackson 5 (he liked the old songs), then did "Billie Jean" (he especially liked.....the new songs). Months after KD2, we got the Grammy performance. Nas obviously liked the old songs ("Made You Look," "One Mic"), but he especially liked.......the new songs ("Rare").

-Thriller gave Michael eight Grammys in one night. KD1 gave Nas his very first Grammy.

-People weren't convinced that Michael and Quincy would work well together because Quincy was too much of a jazz guy. Hit Boy wasn't anyone's first choice to produce an entire Nas album. Alchemist and Premier were more popular choices.

-In the beginning, the albums were one-shot deals. Michael insisted that Off the Wall sounded nothing like The Jackson 5 and didn't want his brothers involved. Joe allowed it as long as it didn't interfere with the band. Nas came to Hit Boy just for a beat and it became an EP meant to be released on Valentine’s Day, then morphed into an entire album.

-Michael himself changed in terms of appearance. He cut his hair short for Off the Wall, got a jheri curl for Thriller and started wearing military jackets, then grew out his hair for Bad and started wearing more punk rock clothing for an edgier look. Nas is known for his half-moon haircut, which he abandoned in the KD era for dreads and eventually, cornrows. Being in New York all the time had an impact on Michael just like being in Los Angeles all the time had an impact on Nas.

-Michael's music became more mature, more paranoid, and he reached his peak as a performer and businessman. Nas' songwriting confidence increased because Hit Boy encouraged him to say whatever he wanted. He's reached his peak as a performer and businessman.

-"Another Part of Me" almost didn't make Bad because of Michael. "Beef" almost didn't make KD3 because of Nas.

-Between Thriller and Bad, we got the Victory Tour, "We Are the World," and Captain EO. Between KD2 and KD3, we got Magic, Nas' first song produced by Premier in over twenty years ("Beat Breaks"), the joint tour with Wu-Tang, and the Spotify podcast.
