the don is a lowkey underrated nas joint. that's one of them songs that you don't pay to much mind on the album but rings off on stage, perfect for a festival or open air set up, it give you a jamaican vibe

The Don rings off. Especially those overseas shows. The United States shows don’t appreciate the way overseas does.

At this point I prefer them in release order. That's not to say KD III is bad because it's exceptional but personally I prefer KD over all of them. To me KD still sounds like it cares to be a successful somewhat commercial accessible album. KD II and KD III don't sound like that. They're strictly for the fans.

Shout out to you for standing on your love for Kd1. People try to discredit that album when talking about this run. I personally like kD3 better than all the albums better than the other 3 but I’m not mad at the kd1 love. I think the blend of sounds have been excellent on all the albums.

"The Don" is everything "Summer on Smash" was trying to be. That's the kind of song you play at an outdoor party at two in the morning until the neighbors come to complain about it. :mjlol:

And Nas killed it lyrically as always. I watched an interview with Salaam Remi and he said that while they were on set for the "Nasty" video, he found an old Nas verse on his computer and blended it with the beat for "The Don." That ended up being the song's first verse.

Yea that shyt was so ill bc it’s true…Def shows Nas can get away with stuff Jay can’t tho :hubie: …I remember Jay caught flack—-by Nas snd others—- for barely insinuating he was better than Big…now Nas hittin Big and Pac with strays lol …is that it is tho
That’s not a shot at Big and Pac tho, it’s just in reference to the fact that greatness is often not acknowledged until someone passes. Jay caught flack cause he was directly referring to being bigger than Biggie

:aicmon:

There’s only 2 rappers whose status as greats is heavily impacted by their death: Big and Pac. It’d be an insult to Nas to think he’s not saavy enough to know what/who he’s talking about. However vaguely and passively it maybe. Same as the Jay shot :childplease:

The same way ‘My first album had no famous guest appearances/The outcome, I'm crowned the best lyricist’ was a shot, is the same way these are shots at Jay, Big, and Pac. Regardless of how passive or light they may be, they are shots.

It’s a prime example of narratives effecting how people digest it. ‘low key underdog Nas’ says it and the Juelzing will commence ….if Jay said it it’s ‘grimey jealous insecure jay always taking subliminals’

KD1 is the album that washed away the “stink” of Nasir (personally I like Nasir but i’m a Stan so I have to acknowledge that the general public didn’t) gave Nas a fresh new sound to build off of for years to come, introduced him to a new generation of rap fans through the collabs with Fivio, Big Sean, Durk, and Ferg, and won Nas his first Grammy.

Plus its got what I believe to be a top 20 Nas song with The Cure.

KD1 is dope as fukk. I still think Parts 2 and 3 (and Magic) are better but thats only because Nas and Hit-Boy found a groove and perfected they’re sound together with each subsequent release.

Put it this way, just because Thriller and Bad were wildly successful, all time classics doesn’t take away from the success and impact of Off The Wall. All three albums are celebrated within Michael’s discography and Quincy is given credit for helping MJ evolve and improve with each album.

Off The Wall they experimented with the (at the time) popular Disco sound. Its got the lush and vibrant love songs (Girlfriend, Its The Falling In Love) the odes to romance lost (She’s Out Of My Life) and the catchy single (Don’t Start Til You Get Enough)

KD1 they experimented with more trap sounding beats. Its got the lush and vibrant love songs (Replace Me, Til The War Is Won) the odes to romance lost (All Bad) and the catchy single (Ultra Black)

Thriller they fused R&B, Pop, and Rock into a sound all its own. Its got the superstar features (Paul McCartney and a overall bigger more ambitious scope with the music videos to match (Beat It, Billie Jean)

KD2 they fused Boom Bap, Drill, West Coast G-Funk, and even a little Southern Trap into a sound all its own. Its got Superstar features (Lauryn Hill, Eminem) and an overall bigger more ambitious scope with music videos to match (Rare, Brunch On Sundays)

Bad they went grander and more epic with the sounds and focused more on Michael’s song writing ( He wrote 10 of the 11 tracks) the album was Michael at his most confident:

“Your lyin' eyes gon' tell you right, ah
So listen up, don't make a fight, ah
Your talk is cheap, you're not a man, ah
You're throwin' stones to hide your hands
Well, they say the sky's the limit
And to me that's really true, ah
But, my friend, you have seen nothin'
Just wait 'til I get through”

Michael at his most vulnerable:

“I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could've been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make a change”

Michael at his most confessionary:

“There was a time I used to say, "Girl, I need you"
But who is sorry now?
You really hurt, you used to take and deceive me
Now who is sorry now?
You got a way of making me feel so sorry
I found out right away
Don't you come walkin' beggin' I ain't lovin' you
Don't you get in my way”

KD3 they went grander and more epic with the songs and focused more on Nas song writing (there are no features across 17 tracks) the album is Nas at his most confident:

“I didn′t have to die so that they could call me the great one
Didn′t take a couple albums, people said it from day one”

Nas at his most vulnerable:

“Bold, beautiful, dangerous
And I blocked out the hate that was aimed at us
Community love, providing jobs
Why would you try to come for me, why you ain't proud of Nas?”

Nas at his most confessionary:

“Time is precious
One day I might need my diaper changed inside a convalescent The soul is different than the flesh is
Life is teachin' me more, wisdom and ignorance is kin
To have peace, you need war
By the time you see the stars in the skies they already burnt out Same way these dudes be shinin' but been burnt out
But we don't change, as we get stuck in our ways
We just act like we agree so we can end the exchange
What's meant for you is sent to you
But you could be the problem, it's not always them my dude”

Nah its not a shot. It’s common that when people die people start calling you great. It’s the whole point of the idea of giving people their flowers while they are still here cause too often we wait till people pass to five em that recognition. In recent years Nipsey, Pop Smoke and Quavo got so many people recognizing their greatness after their death.

Nas is just saying his greatness has always been known

Meanwhile Jay straight up said “if I ain’t better than Big, I’m the closest one”. That’s why people got at Jay, cause he was straight up alluding to be better than Biggie.

The other line “didn’t take a couple albums, people said it from day one” could easily be a jab at Jay and everyone else

The line “my first album had no famous guests appearances” is a shot to Jay, cause he said it as the opening line of his first single right in the middle of their beef.
