ironically in some ways Nas was born in the wrong era. Kendrick and Cole cut from the same cloth as Nas i(inferior MCs though they may be) in terms of subject matter and heavily influenced by him and yet they get praised like crazy and do big numbers because this is the woke era. Nas had to play ball with the mainstream as he was at his peak in the 90s/ 2000s, and now he's 47 so naturally younger dudes don't check for him like they would Kendrick

As Nas said:

Now y'all woke, I'm laughing at nikkas
Y'all used to say "Nas talking that anti-establishment business"

If Kendrick dropped I Gave You Power as a single now people would go crazy for it. But for Nas in the 90s that really had to be an album cut

:ehh:Well said.

This is an interesting thing to think about, if Nas had been in his 20's and came out in the 10's instead of the 90's. I think IWW and I Am.. would have definitely been a bit more critically appreciated.

Pitchfork should be banned from reviewing hip hop. They used to be the go-to platform, now it's a bunch of incel kids writing who have no basis for what is good music. Absolutely shocking review for anyone who saw it. 6.1 - no point even posting, not worth our time. Only annoying thing is it will drop his Metacritic score

Looking back Cole never reached critical heights of even God''s Son. Cole was just more popular at his peak than Nas at his peak. The 26-34 circuit is Coles entire hive

Now TPIB on a commercial and mainstream level is a very, very special album. I dont think KDII was that or ever was supposed to be that, but even with the first one's 73 metascore enough people ACTUALLY enjoyed it where it could win a grammy.

Wanna know the most insulting part. They double back and give Lauryn props on her verse in another tweet. After completely shytting on Nas and the album. Pieces of shyt.

I didn’t even fukking LIKE TPAB like that and yet it’s the highest rated hip hop album of all time. Kendrick is a media darling. That’s all that’s about.

I can tell you the appeal:

1. It perfectly appeals to white guilt without being overtly threatening
2. A lot of these suburbanites and younger people haven't had an introduction real traditional black elements in contemporary mainstream music until then.

Looking back it was a lot better than DAMN, which I still do like and an album I seen on tour
