My original theory on Tobi is that it's a codename more than anything else and he's been played by a couple of different people throughout the story. It's the only thing that makes logical sense.
Obito would've been too young and not strong enough to fight Minato head on like that and he wouldn't have been surprised at how skilled he was because that was his teacher. It could be Obito now though.
Back then I'm thinking it was either Sasuke's pops because his mom talked to Naruto's mom and knew she was leaving or the 2nd Hokage because Tobirama is his birth name and we don't see what happens to him. We just assume he dies and doesn't get taken over or cloned.
Obito is Tobi, there is no way around it, if he decided to make anyone else tobi Kishi would have to either make a bigger reach for a more irrelevant character or introduce a whole new character (unlikely). I get the feeling that Kishi wanted to unveil Tobi as Obito a long time ago, but realized most fans had already realized the obvious, so he decided to throw people off for a while with the whole Tobi=Madara thing and is going to unveil Tobi as Obito soon.
All of the obvious proof has been discussed thoroughly already so I won't mention it, but one thing I haven't seen mentioned is how Kakashi's Mangenkyou and Obito's Mangenkyou powers seem to be inversed from each other ( Kakashi's sends other people to another dimension, Obito's allows him and anybody in his vicinity to travel through another dimension. ) which suggests some sort of relationship between the two powers. My prediction; We're probably going to see how Kakashi got his Mangenkyou soon after Tobi gets revelead, and it probably relates to Obito somehow,( like the only way Kakashi could ever activate his Mangekyou was if the original owner activated his other eye, or something similar to this bs).

Honestly, nothing about Tobi being Obito and being this powerful makes sense. He would have been, like, 14 when he tried to kill Naruto? Making that much of a power jump in a year is flat out incoherent.
Call me crazy, but for this to be Obito (and not a revolving identity that Obito inherited), time travel or some shyt has to be involved. And we really don't need that involved in Kishimoto's already spotty plotting.
I agree with you, but no matter who Tobi ends up being its going to be some bullshyt Kishi pulled out of his ass, it's just alot easier to make him a character he already has some vague connections to and just make up some bullshyt to explain how he got so powerful so fast. I mean, we just saw a war with a bunch of dead ninja zombies, you really wanna rule out time travel as a possibility?
