2017 NBA Draft Capsule: Dennis Smith Jr.
basically everything in this link is why frump holds dsj in high esteem.
its about 30 different clips that showcase his explosiveness.
the knicks need to acquire useful talent right now...a home run would be nice...but what if this dude fails...mind you he already tore his acl once :francis:
im cool with drafting frank when it comes to it.
we need to be bad and be at the top of the draft for next year...for a home run :francis:
Wow, that was a great article.

My question, though, is, at his highest potential considering his height, does he do more than Isiah Thomas?

Actually, the above portion was before I saw the defensive potential portion.

This clip made me awestruck for a subtle reason:

He never crossed his feet once during that defensive clip. I don't know if people understand how powerful that clip was. When a person is driving and seemingly inching past you, it is very difficult to keep the mental concentration to avoid running with the guy and instead continuing to shuffle your feet [right foot to center then left foot from center to the left and repeat]

They continue to show his issues on defense but to me, it seems his issue is whether he's hype about the game or not. Once we get competitive, he'll probably excel and try more but it's scary because I feel like Melo has the same issue, most times he's not locked in defensively because he's just not that into the game except when it's ultra competitive.

He still let's that kid turn the corner on him, though. And drive it from the deep top wing, to the opposite block.

There is really not much in DSJ's profile to suggest he'll even be an AVERAGE defender.

Lol, true.

I've been trying to find some silver linings in there, too. I mean, he has good lateral foot speed. He's quick enough to get beat and still guide his man away from the hoop. But that's if I'm only focusing on the 6% of defensive possessions where he gives a fukk.

He's small. He's got Reptar arms. He barely pays attention when if they're not late in the game and it's obvious his man is about to go at him.

I really think he's going to be so much fun to watch. I won't necessarily be upset if he's a Knick, but I just don't think his profile fits with the kind of player you want for a successful team.

Some players are harder to build around. I think Portland is kind of learning that lesson right now. OKC, too - to a certain extent. And I'm a straight up russ STAN.

DSJr is about to have his second interview with Orlando, dude is built to impress especially in workouts. Realistically it's probably a choice between Monk and Frank. So you have can have a SG who can shoot lights out but is housed in a PG's body or you can get a PG with a 7'1 wingspan that shoots really well. Frank is really young too, even compared to his peers he's young and dude has been the rising star winner in one of the top leagues in Europe competing with grown men for the past two years. Everyone's a project, everyone's got flaws, it's the 8th pick in the draft. But I'd rather take a shot on the young guy who has competed against grown men for two years and is big for his position than the slightly older guy who has competed against only people his own age and is undersized for his position. When Frank went against his peers he SMOKED them.
Not really sold on the euro guys. They said the same bout mudiay but who knows what will happen

If you're a point guard you are going to have other pgs blow past you. Even the best can't handle Wall, Thomas, Westbrook, Kyrie. Point guards are the one position in which they will always get theirs.

Even with Thompson on Kyrie tonight, he is still eating.

The difference is Mudiay was an athlete but his skillset was super raw. Frank's already pretty good in pick and roll plus has a reliable jumper. Mudiay was complimented for his potential on D but Frank is ahead of that also, having already been placed in a defensive stopper role (defending the best offensive piece on some teams). I'm also throwing all my faith behind our European scouting team. They pushed for KP, pushed for Willy and found Kuz as well (who isn't a stud but is already worth his contract and with a bit of growth will be worth more than his cheap cost). There are definitely question marks for Frank, but I'd say that for anybody we could see drop to 8. I liken Frank to Isaac in that both guys have a clear foundation offensively to build on but also both guys are safer picks to me because their defense is as close to a guarantee as you'll get in this draft. Isaac is obviously more exciting as a bigger player whose flashed more on offense but both guys are multi-positional defenders who could be big for their positions if developed as PG or SF respectively.
