Pat Riley is in his 70's and wants to compete at all costs. Sure Melo doesn't make them a contender, but he can talk himself and the fanbase into believing that Melo will be that go to scorer that the Heat desperately need.
The Heat don't have that many options to improve/stay afloat, and Melo is one of the few options. Not too mention there isn't a dominant team in the East, so that may give Riley extra incentive to go after a perceived star in Melo. If Melo is down to go to Miami, this idea of a trade has legs and Riley surely would be interested.
Honestly, Dragic and Whiteside are the perfect running mates for him. A PG to take the ball out of his hands and a Center who can intimidate SF's that fly by him toward the rack. They'd make him look a lot better than the Knicks do for damned sure, not sure how far up the ladder it'd move the Heat but with all those grinding defensive types he really does make sense. Melo always was a good match for a AI's run to the Finals type squad where you surround him with tough defenders, give him a smart PG and let him do what he does which is score.
