He's using his current team which is his best team by far. However a very recent episode had Ash go back to kanto to visit all his old pokemon and they all gave approval to his current team lol. Even Charizard.

Steve the only Pokémon Champion I've had to run it back multiple times to beat
Steel was OD as fukk and I wasn't expecting him to be the champion. I was getting washed before even seeing his Metagross
Ash's current squad is good, but it's never been about the Pokémon w/ Ash. Dude's skills as a trainer have always been lacking and that's what has cost him everytime.
