When I found Red at the top of the mountain in Gold that was the greatest Pokémon moment for me ever. Ash doesn't have to be an antagonist just because they make him the champ.Because that would make people immediately hate the new kids.
He'll eventually pull up on a mentor/vet role like Naruto and the OGs in Boruto. Ash is just done as a protag.
