I think what studios will get from this is people dont go to the movies, just to see the movie. They also go for the experience. The journey. The planning of going out.

Streaming cant beat that, unless it's a TV show.

Let's put it this way.. because the upcoming schedule is so packed, I could definitely see Disney+ trying this again with another title, maybe at a different price point but I'm skeptical that they would actually put up another tentpole.

There's no chance in hell that if those above estimates are true they will risk putting Black Widow up on the service. I think movie theaters are going to live on and still be by far the most profitable way to release a movie.
I keep hearing that Pixar's Soul is the next movie they want to release on Plus but will it be the premiere access or just a straight release like they did with Onward?

ehh, if anything, this is further eliminating yet another category of movies that are considered theater events. kids/family movies as VOD makes sense for the target consumer, they're paying less to entertain the whole family, and kids don't care if it's on the 60" at home or 20ft at the theater, they just want to watch. going forward, it's looking like action/hero/sci-fi flicks are the only things that will draw people to the theater. dramas don't, comedies no longer do, horror, thrillers, indie/niche films - nope nope nope. family movies were the only other category that put up numbers consistently. if they want to up the numbers, they simply need to release these for VOD on agnostic platforms like prime, apple tv, cable providers on demand ordering, etc as opposed to just their app

But the thought of VOD crossed their minds. The difference in being able to keep profits that normally go to theaters, and the subscription bump sounds appealing.

But at the end of the day, you cant beat the one and done in person model. Or the multiple views.

But the uncharted territory pushed them to at least try.

Low budget flicks might go the streaming or at least get streamed sooner than normal runs.

There will have to be changes made.. I'm not seeing anything in these numbers that indicates they are going to profit more from the Disney+ release than they would have in theaters. Mulan likely would have done $800M+ worldwide which they would get around 55% of the global cut - production/advertising I think you are looking at a couple hundred million in profit and then would have made more in rentals/sales/sign-ups afterwards.

I’m not saying they will profit more going this route, especially if it’s exclusive to Disney, but if there is an appetite for these releases from consumers since its a better deal, they may take a hybrid approach by releasing in theaters exclusively for a few weeks then on demand. If families are just as happy to watch at home, that’s another genre of movies that won’t be doing numbers for theaters. The same thing happened to horror and comedies - people are happy to watch at home vs the theater. Theaters were struggling before this, and I see this VOD experiment as accelerating their demise

Flopped in the theaters and didn’t make a big enough splash on Disney+ to break even. :francis:
The Failure of "Mulan" Is More Bad News for Hollywood

DAMN. Tenet got $250 million worldwide??

They're for damn sure also gonna recoup a bunch of money when they release it VOD because I'm definitely watching that one.

On topic, it's hilarious that they purposely let the fake numbers roll for a solid week for PR before correcting it.
