Well Universal was charging $19.99 to rent their movies which is even worse in a sense. So either way theaters dying fukks the single consumer
That’s not bad. I understand some of y’all are movie aficionados who have monthly passes/movie memberships or go to off brand theaters to get low prices due to how often you go, but the average ticket price out here is $13-18, most people aren’t going to the movie dolo, so $19 for two or more people is nothing and just a bit of a premium for a single viewer.

I’m not a movie person like that so I’m usually cool waiting until they’re $5.99 rentals or make their way to HBO

then you got gas and trying to make time. When Black Panther dropped, we drove around to 5 different spots before finding one that wasn’t sold out.

people will preorder tickets well in advance.

:patrice: Okay... I'm just gonna do some quick math here. If Mulan was released in theaters worldwide on a full theater schedule it would likely make between $800 million and $1 billion. I'm not going to say more than that because Aladdin did a little over a billion, it's not as popular as Aladdin I don't think..

So let's say it made $900 million at the box office.

The studio would keep probably around half of that... little more than half. Roughly $500 million. So they are halfway there? I don't think it will reach over $500 million at this stage.

There's a reason why these studios are all postponing until next Summer. Theaters are still where the most bread at.

I think most big-budget movies must make 2-3x the production cost to turn a profit. Unsure how much this cost, but if the figures are true (not hard to believe; easy for families to pay this on their phone) they are almost at the profit level; the marketing usually costs almost as much as paying the actors and the SFX. Now, minus any theater distribution fees, this puts them closer to the profit level.

Also, Disney used this as a tool to see how many people would d/l the app and how many would purchase.

The interesting thing would be moving forward. Will any/all Disney big-budget movies carry the $30 tag? Will they make a monthly package fee for premium movies?

Nolan messed up not putting Tenet straight to streaming

He was HELL BENT on having it in theaters. Part of me is happy that he went so hard for a movie starring a BLACK MAN to be seen as intended but the other part of me is like “shyt should’ve been on HBO Max”.

I said this before but don't underestimate that 30 bucks is a deal for households with two or more children. And 9 million households paying that price is hardly a strange number.

This business model obviously does not work for all films but for family films it's strong.

It's definitely a deal for families compared to the theater, but considering the budget, Disney's losing money on this.

I can see this working for the animated films more than anything.

Nolan gets a cut of the box office, that's why he's dead set on having it in theaters.:pachaha:

I live in a top 5 biggest city and I can still see a movie for $5.xx at my local AMC before noon.

Tickets might be like $11 at night. I had never joined the monthly pass

i don't believe it with so many shared codes and pirating going on. Also, I haven't watched it but literally everyone i know that's seen it says it fukking sucks.
Most people either don't know how or are too scared to pirate.

I got cousins still buying bootleg DVDs and shyt.

That’s an amazing deal, that’s no where near ticket prices most places I’ve been, unless it’s a bootleg/old theater. Matinee is like 12, full price 15+. 7 is the deal price at one regal chain. But everywhere I’ve lived movies have been 12+ full price (bay, Chicago, ny, dc, Philly)

either way, they are pricing these for the fact that most people are watching as more than one person

I'm one of them...thank you, Fandango.com. I walked str8 in to see Black Panther with my phone being scanned while they looked crazy and was fighting for tickets.

little kids and disney obsessives is big business.

on one hand, i think this might be a nail (no the last, but a nail) in the coffin to theaters.

on the other hand, i think this might be a bad sign of things to come for disney+ subscribers. they might start putting shyt out for people willing to pay extra to view ahead of time, rather than straight to their service.

I had an AMC theater near me that hadn't been updated (still had the old seats, not reclining, no booze or decent food etc.) that charged $6 all day erry day.
That's the theater I'd go to when I was bored and decided to see stuff I wasn't really excited about seeing.
