Stanley Kubrick's work does this a lot...it's something that he's sort of known for actually.
2001 - Starts out as a somewhat predictable (Although highly influential and technically brilliant) space ship movie, later delves into a horror movie with a rogue AI. Of course, the ending may even be seen as a third type of movie, although I've no clue how to describe it....
I think this film even labels it's sections but it's been a long time since I've seen it.
Clockwork Orange - Starts out as a dystopian, juvenile crime film. Midway it changes to this strange, sort of character study type film about a broken ex-con and experimental psychology. One of my all time favorite movies.
The Shining - Family Drama that turns into a straight up horror film. The scene where Nicholson bytches at Duvall about distracting him is one of my favorite movie scenes....
Full Metal Jacket - The most stark midway switch. Beginning is all about the military academy. Pretty much set the standard for insane Drill Sargent. Once they ship off to Vietnam War, it's a...Vietnam War movie heh. A very good film, I think that this was the first Kubrick movie I saw, and I think it's a damn good introduction to him, but nowadays I actually consider it one of his weaker efforts.
Eyes Wide Shut - This is more subtle I think, partially because this movie is fukking bizarre and it's hard to classify it as anything really. Still, beginning seems like some sort of erotic family drama. Of course, everything changes after the party scene. Anyone whose seen it knows which scene I'm talking about. After that, it's this strange sort of, paranoid detective thriller, it's almost like Rosemary's Baby in a way. I'm actually about to watch this again, right now.
What's interesting about Kubrick unlike say, Danny Boyle, is that although the genre changes, I don't really feel like the tone of the film changes. It doesn't come off as gimmicky, you feel like it makes sense that Jack Torrence goes crazy in The Shining because everything leading up to the change in genre backs up the second half of the film. I liked Sunshine quite a bit, but I will never forgive this nicca Boyle for 28 Days. What the fukk was that army shyt about?
