Stanley Kubrick's work does this a lot...it's something that he's sort of known for actually.

2001 - Starts out as a somewhat predictable (Although highly influential and technically brilliant) space ship movie, later delves into a horror movie with a rogue AI. Of course, the ending may even be seen as a third type of movie, although I've no clue how to describe it.... I think this film even labels it's sections but it's been a long time since I've seen it.

Clockwork Orange - Starts out as a dystopian, juvenile crime film. Midway it changes to this strange, sort of character study type film about a broken ex-con and experimental psychology. One of my all time favorite movies.

The Shining - Family Drama that turns into a straight up horror film. The scene where Nicholson bytches at Duvall about distracting him is one of my favorite movie scenes....

Full Metal Jacket - The most stark midway switch. Beginning is all about the military academy. Pretty much set the standard for insane Drill Sargent. Once they ship off to Vietnam War, it's a...Vietnam War movie heh. A very good film, I think that this was the first Kubrick movie I saw, and I think it's a damn good introduction to him, but nowadays I actually consider it one of his weaker efforts.

Eyes Wide Shut - This is more subtle I think, partially because this movie is fukking bizarre and it's hard to classify it as anything really. Still, beginning seems like some sort of erotic family drama. Of course, everything changes after the party scene. Anyone whose seen it knows which scene I'm talking about. After that, it's this strange sort of, paranoid detective thriller, it's almost like Rosemary's Baby in a way. I'm actually about to watch this again, right now.

What's interesting about Kubrick unlike say, Danny Boyle, is that although the genre changes, I don't really feel like the tone of the film changes. It doesn't come off as gimmicky, you feel like it makes sense that Jack Torrence goes crazy in The Shining because everything leading up to the change in genre backs up the second half of the film. I liked Sunshine quite a bit, but I will never forgive this nicca Boyle for 28 Days. What the fukk was that army shyt about?

Halfway Plot Switch - Television Tropes & Idioms - Abandon hope all ye who enter here, this site is a toxic time sink.

Like 2001 before it, and Sunshine after, it starts out on a hard sci-fi tip but descends into horror. The horror here is more Clive Barker type horror. Demonic underpinnings and such. Still a shift in genre.

A lot of people felt that Sunshine jacked from this, and I actually think it's a warranted critique, very similar. Either way, I actually prefer this for being slightly more campy and fun. Also because of Fishburn Da Gawd....:myman:

This movie is actually amazing, I could have taken more of either half. The first half is a damn good crime movie. If they never went to that bar and the whole film was simply about these guys sneaking across the border with this family, I still would have....:eat: Second half is a fun vampire/monster flick. Once again, if the entire movie just took place in the bar, I would have had no issues. Still, the gave us the best of both worlds I think.

Adaptation.

After Nic Cage goes to the screenwriting seminar it basically turns into a parody of OTT generic action movies. Hilarious.

Someone mentioned Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway, but the change up in Lynch's Inland Empire is even more extreme. The first 40 or so minutes are pretty weird but in a typical Lynch like fashion but once Laura Dern's character enters that door it basically turns into this insane trip which dispenses with any kind of conventional narrative. Wild film.

I guess the last 20 minutes of There Will Be Blood was a bit of a switch up. It was weird having the story jump so far ahead of time, and the tone in the last scene is something straight out of a Kubrick film.

Speaking of PTA, the plague of frogs in Magnolia was extremely random and unexpected.

While I see a lot of people in this thread using examples like these in a negative way, I actually like what these films do with unconventional narrative twists. There are some films that are obviously badly written, but when done right (like my examples IMO and dude above with the Kubrick films), it can add to a film.

Another one now I think about it is Gus Van Sant's Elephant. 3/4's of the film plays out like a very lowkey Highschool drama. Last half it turns into a disturbing film about a high school shooting.

Dark Knight Rises...

Bane goes from being a criminal mastermind beast to a dumb simpleton that gets thrashed by Batman and unceremoniously killed by whack azz catwoman...

The more I think about TDKR the more annoyed I become with it.

Started out as satirical take on how blacks been portrayed in the media from the beginning of time with a hilarious portrayal of an uncle Tom by Damon Wayne (that voice he used :dead:), then the movie takes a deadly turn.

I'll add this one too.

one that wasn't MIDWAY in the film like the thread says. 2nd, bane wasn't a dumb simpleton, he was merely 2nd in command when everyone thought he was the true leader.

but i see how u troll this in...

Actually, for the first half of the movie Bane is in full control and has everything planned out to the T and PERFECTLY. Then after beating Batman down, Bane resorts to doing dumb things, unnecessary delays, allows himself to get beaten by Batman (in a situation where confronting Batman served no purpose), starts simping, then allows catwoman to take him by surprise and blow him to bits.... It is a complete unraveling of Bane's character. The movie basically has two versions of Bane.

In TDK, the script did not resort to unraveling Joker to benefit Batman. Whereas, Bane goes from Unstoppable Beast to Simp halfway through TDKR. It is the typical scenario where the villain unnecessarily delays accomplishing their task, does dumb shyt and tells the hero their plan while about the accomplish their plan then ends up getting spanked by the hero.
