Streaming is the new normal. Adapt or die.

“Basically” - Redman

Gladiator 2 was forgettable and should have never been made. That's the problem.

I’ve heard it was horrible but the point I was making is it’s like this with most movies that still new now in theaters; they’re still in theaters and on streaming platforms at the same time

Long gone are the days of the 90’s and 2000’s :wow:

His complaint is valid but he’s not getting to the heart of it which is always the money. People aren’t going to the theaters to watch movies so the studios aren’t making their invested money back that they put into films. Theaters aren’t seeing people so they aren’t getting enough money to continue running. Streaming is too cheap to compensate the studios for making all different genre of films. This leads to less diverse films being greenlit hence the shrinking of different genre films, more shortcuts, less quality control and more CGI. People clamor for better movies to go to theaters but they barely see those outside of tent pole films which is why the studios only green light reboots and sequels bc they believe they have a built in proven audience (I don’t agree with this). The issue is the money has dried up and all of these issues are a consequence of that. Until the streaming model can produce enough revenue to supply the cost of making movies like the old days, it’s a wrap for the foreseeable future. Always follow the money.

TV has been the far superior platform for a while now. Just much better quality overall.

There is also the lack of genuine movie stars. You can't say or market the new Denzel/Tom Cruise/Brad Pitt/Will Smith/Tom Hanks/Leonardo/etc. movie.
We're not in peak TV any longer of the mid 2010s. We're in the era of mid TV. Last year was not a great year for TV and I watched a shyt ton of it. I'd say 2023 was a better movie year than any TV year we've had this decade

I kinda agree with Quentin "Dead n-word Storage" Tarantino.

Obviously his best years of movie making are long behind him, but I've noticed the cinemas are just dead nowadays. It just hasn't been the same since COVID. A few years ago, places would be filled to capacity during a movie premier and you couldn't book a spot to save your life, now you can just sit anywhere you want pretty much. The last IMAX showing I went to that was full was Equalizer 3 and even at that point, it felt like an anomaly. Avengers IW/Endgame were the last time when it felt like an adventure and queues were out the door and you had to arrive at least an hour before.

Not to mention, it's overpriced especially confectionery and people would find it cheaper to just watch flicks on their 85 inch TVs and order some food since movies get released to TV real quick anyway.

It will never be the same but this year looks like we're gonna have a few bangers, so we'll see.
U really have to work to find good movies now

Ppl complain about music but ive found a bunch of great artists with YT music algorithm

Movies and TV require a greater timesink

Noone cares about anything anymore.

Movies and tv aint like it used to be. Arts dying because people forgot they were their to make something great instead of get rich. Disposable. All of it. Its redundant.
Culture died because of the internet. There's just way too much shyt out there to grab everyone's attention. We're all in our own bubbles of content now with nothing really connecting everyone as a whole.

The industry ain't the same but what you gonna do?

I guess in Tarantino's case he's going to do plays, books, maybe a TV series. I think he likes making films though, I'm sceptical that his next one will be his last.

Theaters took a hit in covid but they still make a lot of money. I saw Nosferatu and The Brutalist in the theater recently and it was worth the money to have that experience. The crowd reaction was crazy to different parts of those films, I never saw those kinds of reactions before.

The model changed a lot, streamers are full of cheaply produced trash that either barely qualifies as a film, or is made to order by execs, based around hiring 1 or 2 famous actors. Theres also good stuff on streamers, but theres so much stuff, that viewers get overwhelmed and good projects might never find their audience. Its going to be even worse when the internet also becomes flooded with AI generated films.

Seeing a movie in a theater is always cool but how do you convince people:

1.) Drive to the theater.
2.) Spend $35-40 on a pair of tickets.
3.) Another $20-25 on concessions.
4.) Potentially sit near some people on their phones or talking during the film.

Over sitting on the couch and pulling something up on Apple TV or Hulu? Or beyond that, renting it on Prime for $15-20 a month or two after the theatrical release and being able to pause, eat your own food, etc. from the comfort of your own home?

Or look at it like the old days and wait for it to come to one of the streaming platforms?

I don't know. Many people enjoy the experience. Honestly theres probably a limit to profitability for most theater owners. You'll see a lot of multiplexes get sold over the next 10 years, so I'm not sure how long studios will want to deal with theater chains unless they start buying them out so they can have an Apple movie theater, Netflix theater etc.
