People don’t leave it out at all. Him admitting it years later just doesn’t make a difference as he didn’t do anything about it when he first found out about it, which is what his job as a parent was supposed to be. In that moment, he failed his daughter and nothing he says or does will change that.

Of course he failed his daughter. And he knows that. He acknowledges that. He has to live with that. He himself said this in public so that others can learn from his failure. He didn't have to confess that to the world. Nobody could have ever known about it. But he put it out there so others wouldn't make the same mistake.
